The 2021 National Tournament at Arizona State University was the national tournament for the 2021 season, occurring from Friday, May 21st, 2021 to Monday, May 24th, 2021. Due to concerns over COVID-19 transmission, the tournament was hosted entirely online. The tournament was the first national tournament to occur since 2019, due to the national tournament of 2020 being cancelled due to COVID-19. Despite the online format, the tournament was like most other national tournaments, running a series of traditional and trial events and hosting 60 teams.
On December 21, 2020, it was announced that the entire tournament would be held virtually throughout the week of May 17, 2021. With this announcement, the tournament also introduced other virtual activities that would be run at the tournament, including virtual tournaments of the campus and lectures from students and professors. Despite the virtual format, 120 teams will continue to compete at the competition. Additionally, it was announced that the tournament will be run under the Mini SO model and Scilympiad will be used for most events. Beginning in May 2021, more information was released about event-specific and tournament-specific information, including procedures for taking certain tests on Scilympiad and academic integrity policies.
Additionally, to increase engagement with the tournament, the tournament hosted a variety of events beginning on Monday, May 17th. Events included presenting various winners of competitions such as the Team T-Shirt Award and winners of the Ward's Kit, along with talks by presenters. The opening ceremony was held on Friday, May 21st, live on the Science Olympiad YouTube channel and featured remarks from Science Olympiad personnel, the Parade of States compilation, a keynote speech by NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy, and the announcement of the 2021 Founder's Scholarship awards.
The competition itself took place on Saturday, May 22nd beginning at 11AM EDT. The final event ended at 9:10PM EDT. The awards ceremony was held on Monday, May 24th, 2021, live on YouTube. The event included remarks by the Science Olympiad CEO Jenny Kopach, the announcement of the Lockheed Martin Spirit Award winners (Slauson Middle School in Division B and Townsend Harris High School in Division C), the results of the tournament, and the announcement of the next national tournament. The winner of the tournament in Division B was Kennedy Middle School, scoring 73 points, and the winner in Division C was Mason High School, scoring 120 points.
Tournament format
A few weeks before the tournament, it was announced that the tournament would be run under the Mini SO model, meaning that for most events, partners will need to compete from separate locations. However, an exception was made for most build events so that partners could record their videos together.
To maintain academic integrity, the Out of Browser time will be tracked for most events, although teams are permitted to have separate communication programs (for example, FaceTime or Discord) in the background.
Specific event modifications
Boomilever
- This event will not count towards overall team score.
- This event will be administered live on Saturday, May 22, through Zoom.
- Participants are allowed to be together, and an adult needs to be present in the testing room.
- Teams are expected to provide their own testing stand. This can be the official Science Olympiad testing stand or a makeshift stand.
- Teams are expected to provide two cameras of the testing setup.
Detector Building
- This event will not count towards overall team score.
- This event consists of a test on Scilympiad, as well as a video and log submission due by Wednesday, May 19.
- Participants are allowed to be together, and an adult needs to be present in the testing room.
