Michigan is a member state in Science Olympiad in the Central United States. The Michigan was one of the first Science Olympiad programs and continues to be one of the most numerous programs in the country, with it ranking as the state with the third highest amount of teams in 2020. Due to the state's large size, a plentiful amount of invitationals and regionals are run each year. From these regionals, sixty teams from each division advance to the state tournament, of which two of these teams will typically advance to the national tournament.
The first state tournament was run in 1983 at the Lawrence Institute of Technology, when Science Olympiad was still a trial program. The success of the tournament helped to validate Science Olympiad for other educators and states. Two years later, the first national tournament was run in Michigan in 1985 at Michigan State University. It was again hosted at Michigan State University the following year, 1986.
Additionally, the state has seen a gradual increase in the number of invitationals run in the state. Notable invitationals include the UMSO Invitational (run by students at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor) and the Troy Athens Invitational (run by Troy Athens High School), both of which frequently see schools visit from other states. Other invitationals, such as the Allendale Invitational typically see more interest from Michigan-based teams. This growth in invitationals was slowed in the 2021 season, where the number of invitationals in the state nearly halved, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, the state has a history of running a large number of regional tournaments. Regional tournaments are split by county, although not every regional tournament will contain the same number of counties. For example, only one regional covers the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan, while one regional covers Oakland county (which includes a portion of the metropolitan Detroit area). Sixty teams from each division will advance to the state tournament hosted at Michigan State University in Lansing since 1990. There are no long-running champions at the Division B or Division C state tournaments.
In its entire history, the state has always received two bids to the national tournament. Besides the early hosting of the national tournament in 1985 and 1986, the national tournament was also held in Michigan in 1998 at Grand Valley State University, outside of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The teams who represent Michigan at the national tournament typically place in the top 30 each year. Teams from Michigan have won the national tournament several times, although no team from Michigan has claimed the title since 1992 in Division B and 1997 in Division C.
History
Science Olympiad was started in Michigan on March 29, 1982 when Dr. Gerard J. Putz, the Regional Science Consultant at Macomb Intermediate School District, and John C. "Jack" Cairns, State Science Supervisor for Delaware Department of Instruction, shared the Science Olympiad program with Macomb County educators. The first two Science Olympiad tournaments took place in Michigan at Lawrence Institute of Technology in April 1983 and at Oakland University in May 1984.
