Longfellow Middle School is a Division B team that competes in Virginia's Fairfax Regional. The team has been the winner of the state tournament 16 times, starting a streak in 2006 and only interrupted in 2011 and 2020 (COVID-19 pandemic) that continues to this day. The team routinely participates in the Lanier Invitational and Kenston Invitational, as well as recently taking part in the National Cathedral Invitational. They were unable to attend the 2018 Kenston Invitational due to the risk of travel brought by Winter Storm Hunter.
In 2019, again, they were unable to attend Kenston, as this invitational was cancelled due to inclement weather.
In 2020, the team decided to participate in other invitationals. From the discontinuation of the Lanier Invitational, Longfellow instead went to the Lake Braddock Invitational. For the first time, they also went to the Rustin Invitational in Pennsylvania and the Harvard Invitational, competing against other nationally-ranked teams. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, state and nationals tournaments were cancelled, ending the season of a team with high hopes early.
In the 2021 season, the team participated in many additional invitationals, including the Dodgen-Walton Invitational, the Kenston Invitational (FINALLY, although it was virtual!), and the STEMBoost Invitational. The team tied with Fulton Science Academy for 6th place overall at the 2021 National Tournament, but lost the tiebreaker, resulting in a 7th place finish.
In 2022, the team continued to participate in many satellite invitationals, such as the Science Olympiad National Invitational (SONI), BirdSO Invitational, Boyceville Invitational, Dodgen-Walton Invitational, Lexington Invitational, and Johns Hopkins Invitational. The team also participated in the Lake Braddock Invitational, which was a hybrid tournament. At the Virginia State tournament, Longfellow's team again placed 1st, winning against Cooper Middle School and BASIS Independent McLean, as well as achieving a new record low of points at states (49) and maintaining their winning streak. They went on to place 5th at the 2022 National Tournament, breaking yet another school record, 5th being their highest placement so far at Nationals.
