Copyrights on the Scioly.org wiki are important for users to understand so that content can be uploaded to the wiki and taken from the wiki properly. In general, material on the wiki lies under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license, of which the text and a summary can be found here. This means that material that is uploaded to the wiki must be eligible with this license. Additionally, this means that material taken from the wiki must generally be used in accordance with the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license.

Adding to the wiki

When you add self-developed materials to the wiki, you are agreeing to upload them in accordance in terms with the wiki's CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. If you need help in determining whether a specific piece of information can be added to the wiki, feel free to post your question in #wiki or message moderators.

If you repeatedly violate copyright regulations and avoid staff warnings, you may be blocked from editing. You will always be notified before this occurs, unless you are making the infringing edits in a very quick period.

Adding text

Text on the wiki should not be copyrighted, and instead should be formed by the user adding the text to the wiki. If copyrighted text needs to be used on the wiki, then a source should be given and the text should comply with fair use.

Adding files

Files added to the wiki must comply with a license compatible with the wiki's CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. This does not necessarily mean that the file itself has to be exactly the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. In fact, here are some licenses that will and won't comply with the wiki's license:

When you upload a file to the wiki, there is a "Licensing" dropdown where you can choose the license that best describes the file you are uploading. If you do not choose a license for the file you are uploading, the file may be flagged with {{No licensing info}} and a staff member may review the file to determine if it needs to be deleted in order to comply with the wiki's Creative Commons license. If this occurs, a staff member may reach out to you regarding the file you uploaded.

If you are uploading a work of your own to the wiki and would like to license it under a free license, here's a guide to help pick which option is best for you:

In simple terms, the most comprehensive, restrictive license would be licensing your work under CC-BY-SA 4.0 and GFDL together. The most free licensing is the CC-Zero license, allowing derivative works to use your work in almost any way without attribution.

Uploading non-free content

Typically, media on Scioly.org should be free and able to be reused by readers of the wiki, however, there can be exceptions. Content which is not free and is copyrighted is known as non-free content. This type of content can be used on the Scioly.org wiki with some important guidelines:

Using non-free content on the Scioly.org wiki

Non-free content uploaded to the wiki must meet all of the following guidelines (these guidelines are sourced from the Wikimedia project and the English Wikipedia):

No free equivalent. Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same purpose.
Respect for commercial opportunities. Non-free content is not used in a manner that is likely to replace the original market role of the original copyrighted material.
Minimal usage:
1. Minimal number of items. Multiple items of non-free content are not used if one item can convey equivalent significant information.
2. Minimal extent of use. An entire work is not used if a portion will suffice. Low- rather than high-resolution/fidelity/bit rate is used (especially where the original could be used for deliberate copyright infringement). This rule also applies to the copy in the File: namespace.
Previous publication. Non-free content must be a work which has been published or publicly displayed outside Scioly.org by (or with permission from) the copyright holder, or a derivative of such a work created by a Scioly.org editor.
Content. Non-free content meets general Scioly.org content standards and is encyclopedic.
Media-specific policy. Non-free content meets the media-specific policy on Scioly.org. For example, images must meet Scioly.org:Media policy.
One-article minimum. Non-free content is used in at least one article.
Contextual significance. Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding.
Restrictions on location. Non-free content is allowed only in articles (not disambiguation pages), and only in the article namespace. These images should not be displayed in other namespaces, such as the user namespace.
Image description page. The image or media description page contains the following:
1. Identification of the source of the original copyrighted material, supplemented, where possible, with information about the artist, publisher and copyright holder, and year of copyright; this is to help determine the material's potential market value.
2. A copyright tag that indicates which Wikipedia policy provision is claimed to permit the use. For example, using Template:Non-free content rationale.
3. The name of each article (a link to each article is also recommended) in which fair use is claimed for the item, and a separate, specific non-free use rationale for each use of the item. A redirect pointing to the page where the non-free content is intended to be used is acceptable as the article name in the non-free use rationale. The rationale is presented in clear, plain language and is relevant to each use.

If a file meets all of these guidelines, you can tag it with an acceptable non-free content template.

Taking from the wiki

Most of the wiki is licensed under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. This is a Creative Commons license that allows you to reuse content from the wiki, with specific restrictions. More specifically:

You are free:

to Share—to copy, distribute and transmit the work, and
to Remix—to adapt the work

for any purpose, even commercially.

Under the following conditions:

Attribution—You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work.)
Share Alike—If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same, similar or a compatible license.

With the understanding that:

Waiver—Any of the above conditions can be waived if you get permission from the copyright holder.
Other Rights—In no way are any of the following rights affected by the license:
- your fair dealing or fair use rights;
- the author's moral rights; and
- rights other persons may have either in the work itself or in how the work is used, such as publicity or privacy rights.
Notice—For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work. The best way to do that is with a link to https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/

However, files may be licensed under a different license, which may allow for more loose restrictions. For examples, files in the public domain can be reused with no restrictions whatsoever. If a file is licensed under a different license than the wiki's default license, then it will be listed on the file page using a specific copyright template.
