Talk:Reach for the Stars
Tips
I am in 7th grade and i go to Kennedy Middle school in New Mexico i am doing this event this year for my science team... any one have any tips?
Well, first of all, I would suggest reading through the wiki at least once. You also should try asking any further questions on the forum thread, as they will be more likely to be answered there. Eaststroudsburg13 10:38, 25 October 2011 (EST)
Part I Organization
Thoughts on separating the stars and DSO sections into pages for specific years? --Unome (talk) 10:32, 5 July 2016 (CDT)
Oh god, this page needs some updating... --Texas (talk) 01:32, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
I'm gradually adding all of the stars, constellations, and DSOs from the 2016-2017 list. --Texas (talk) 01:50, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
Would it be helpful to change "Part I" to a table like the DSO page, with similar columns? --Raxu (talk) 22:12, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
I think that'd be fine. A table is definitely preferable to a wall of text. I'd just recommend using judgment as to what to include (i.e. pictures are probably more relevant for DSOs than stars). Also, if you can work in a section on constellations (not necessarily as part of the table, can be separate), especially with an example labeled star chart, that would be stellar. (lol get it). Labeled star charts completed and table created. Table needs much more additions so the "incomplete" tag should be kept for now. --Raxu (talk) 13:58, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
Should we hide the star table, since it is taking quite a bit of space? It might make the page a little easier to work with. --Raxu (talk) 22:49, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
I don't necessarily think so. I think making the pictures smaller, or setting specific column widths, would be more ideal. Generally, we do not want to hide information that is of immediate interest/relevance to the event. EastStroudsburg13 (talk) 04:25, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
Slowly editing DSO's on my Userpage. Creating Multiwavelength pics take a while. --Raxu (talk) 15:42, 16 July 2017 (UTC)
Phew, it's been a week of work, and I finally put it together. Super proud of the end result! There are few information and links, so it definitely still needs work, but the main parts (especially the collage image for multiwavelengths) are done. The original DSO section and image sections are all incorporated into the new table.
The current structure of the pictures is that there is a collage combining all the common images, within it links to the specific images. Any suggestion of what to put on the DSO section summary to make sure it's clear? --Raxu (talk) 06:07, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
I think the description that is there is fine. Good work!
Another Page
I do think we should consider putting the star and DSO tables on another page, similar to the Astronomy/DSOs page. Theoretically, there isn't as much turnover from year to year with these, so there likely could be a lot of carryover from year to year, reducing the need for entire tables dedicated to past years, but I think a separate page could allow the tables to remain unhidden without making the main page really unwieldy and user-unfriendly. Thoughts, ideas, recommendations (from anyone)? Would this actually help or would it just be more confusing? --EastStroudsburg13 (talk) 17:53, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
Yes, that would be helpful - I love the Astronomy organization! Also, right now the image and tables sometimes load first before they are hidden, so you get an inconvenient flash of the star chart/table. The additional page may be better titled "Stars and DSOs". A couple of side notes: In the top right of the page, at the RFTS event box, it says "There are no images available for this event", where we can put in links to the new uploaded images; Also, the Reach for the Stars 11-12 page contains little to no additional information compared to this page. Once we move the additional DSOs over, it wouldn't be helpful any more. --Raxu (talk) 21:54, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
That sounds good; I'd be in favor of a Reach for the Stars/Stars and DSOs page. When the 11-12 page becomes redundant, it can be deleted. As for the event box, the "images" refer to the image gallery; we can play around with ways to try to get that to apply to wiki images, though. EastStroudsburg13 (talk) 03:32, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
Incomplete edits
Time to fill in Stellar Evolution. Will be really excited once it's done :) --Raxu (talk) 13:57, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
