Another good morning to all WSO coaches,

This past year has created great challenges for Wisconsin Science Olympiad and National Science Olympiad to engage our communities in the pursuit of excellence in STEM education. I am amazed by the excitement for Science Olympiad demonstrated by students, parents, and coaches across Wisconsin. Everyone remembers how heart breaking it was to cancel state and nationals in 2020 and even though this past year the tournament format had to take on an entirely new look/approach, we were still able to offer the Science Olympiad tournament experience to the students.

Unfortunately, our Science Olympiad community also experienced behavior and actions from a select group of coaches that did not meet the standards set by the Code of Ethics of Science Olympiad. I am sending this note to our WSO community to notify you that several volunteers from the Madison West/Hamilton community violated the Science Olympiad Code of Ethics and General Rules during the 2020-2021 WSO season. Due to their actions, the Wisconsin Science Olympiad Board, in consultation with the National Science Olympiad directors, has informed the Madison West/Hamilton schools that these coaching volunteers will no longer be a part of Science Olympiad. In addition, Madison West will not be allowed to compete in Science Olympiad for the 2021-2022 season. The WSO Board and I look forward to working with the Madison West/Hamilton school administration to maintain healthy Science Olympiad programs at those schools.

This was a very difficult decision for the WSO Board, but it was necessary to support and continue to foster a strong WSO community that follows the Code of Ethics and strives to engage students in STEM learning activities and career opportunities that await them. The WSO Board thanks all of you for your collaborative efforts in promoting WSO to students across the state.

Please contact me with any questions you may have. Thank you.
