After two consecutive seasons as the alternate for state (one spot away from qualifying), the team finally broke through in 2012-2013, finishing 5th in regionals, beating rival school Neuqua, and qualified for state. The team had grown from barely fielding a varsity team to having two JVs too. With a new co-coach and returning leadership, the team was headed in the right direction. Team Award: Crystal Lake Central Spirit Award. The season ended with three medals (two normal events, one trial event) at State vs. the big dogs (AA), as Science Olympiad decided that since Waubonsie had beaten a top 10 school from the previous year (Neuqua), the team would be strong enough to compete in the powerhouse AA division.
The team continued to grow further, with nearly 60 bright students and strong leadership and coaches. In 2014-2015, the team won the Neuqua Valley Regional, and repeated as champions the following season with a very strong showing from a promising core. In 2015-2016, the team finally cracked the top 5 in state and defeated both rival schools, Neuqua and Metea Valley. Although Waubonsie was unable to three-peat at the Neuqua Valley Regional, they still ended the 2016-17 season with another impressive top 5 finish at State.
In 2017-2018, the team was only four points away from finishing fifth at State for a third year in a row. After a rocky start to the 2018-2019 season, Waubonsie finished 17th at State, yet they still ranked higher than their rivals at Metea Valley. With the strong leadership of the captains and coaches, Waubonsie started the 2019-2020 season with nearly 80 members, making up a varsity team along with three JV teams! After a strong 2nd place finish at the Neuqua Valley Regional, the Varsity team is looking forward to a comeback at the this year's ISO State Tournament! The team has their eyes set on continued improvement in the future with high hopes!
