Ravena, New York is a small town about 20 miles South of the State Capital, Albany. The student population is made up from rural and suburban backgrounds.
Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Middle School has participated in Science Olympiad for many years, and have made it to the state competition every year since 2006. Because the team's local success, the team has become a popular 'club' for students at the Middle School. Each year, they get a little bit stronger and look forward to improving at both the Regional and State Levels.
The past two years, Ravena-Coyemans-Selkirk Middle School has hosted a State-wide Invitational which has become quite a success. Teams that have participated both years are: Goff Middle School and Ravena Middle School (both Capital Region), Gelinas Junior High School, South Orangetown, Eagle Hill, and St. Martin de Porres Marianist School. New teams that participated in 2010 are Onteora and HENAA Homeschoolers. Attending teams provide tests for some of the events and all teams get to take home scored tests and blank copies for practice. We score each event as individual and there is no overall team winner. Because of this, multiple teams can compete as a single team and students/friends who may not compete together at Regionals can compete together. It also allows coaches to try out different combinations in a low stress environment. It is a fun day for everyone and the general attitude is friendly.
