Glory Years
Arendell Parrott Academy had a string of dominance in North Carolina in the late 1990s and early 2000s when they won the state championship 10 times in a row. From 1999 to 2002, they placed in the top 5 in nationals each year, peaking at 2nd in 2001, when they only lost to perennial power J.C. Booth Middle School by 96 points.
Later Struggles
In 2005, however, their reign suddenly came to an end as Davidson IB Middle School, which had placed ahead of Arendell in the previous national competition, upset them in the state finals. Jay M. Robinson Middle School finished a surprising second, leaving Arendell out of nationals for the first time in over a decade. They bounced back by placing second the next year, but they could not channel their previous success at nationals, placing a relatively low 26th. For years, they bounced between placing second and missing nationals as Davidson and Robinson alternated state titles, and it seemed that their years of glory had come to an end.
Resurgence
In 2011, however, Arendell reclaimed their spot as the best team in North Carolina. They beat out their rivals to become state champion for the first time in seven years, and they edged out new second-place winner Piedmont Middle School at nationals. Although they may not have placed in the top 10 as prior teams had done, this revival may incite an improvement in the team that could cause it to become a national force once again.
