hi, im zaid, im going to be a freshman at troy high school and will tryout for the troy science olympiad team this year for helicopter, fossils, and dynamic planet. i previously competed on sierra vista's varsity team. i was the 2024 flight nats champ.
(OLD) Hey! I'm Zaid (8th Grade) and I currently compete for Sierra Vista's varsity team. In my 7th grade year, I competed in the events: Solar System, Dynamic Planet, and Rocks and Minerals, also competing in some filler build events. I was on Sierra Vista's third team (humble begginings!!). In my 8th grade year, I competed in Dynamic Planet, Fossils, Flight, and Meteorlogy. I competed for both Sierra Vista's Varsity and Junior Varsity teams this year, and am currently preparing for the SoCal States Tournament! I hope to see you all there. My event rankings from worst to best are: Dynamic Planet (Hydrology 22-23), Rocks and Minerals, Meteorology (Severe Storms 23-24), Solar System (22-23), Fossils, Flight, and Dynamic Planet (23-24: greatest scioly event of all time fs)

2022-2023 Season
This was my seventh grade year, my event ranking for this year was from best to worst: fast facts, solar system, rocks and minerals, and dynamic planet.
7th Grade Season Recap
Well ill admit it, i was trash in my 7th grade year. I think the best thing that came out of this year was the study skills I learned and the relationships I built with my fellow teammates, rocks and minerals has really helped me out in fossils, and ive practically become a master at bindering because of all the binder events I did this year. I was glad I did solar because it taught me how to make cheat sheets, well I wont be using any cheat sheets anytime soon but i still perfer binders over cheat sheets!!!! Not gonna put it in the table, but I got 2nd in Science Pun Fun and 3rd in Ornithology at the Lexington Invitational this year.

2023-2024 Season
This was my eighth grade year, and Ill be competing in socal states this upcoming april!! My event ranking from best to worst this year is: dynamic planet, flight, fossils, and meteorology. This year has taught me so much, not only about scioly but a lot about the differen kinds of people too. I just wanted to give a shoutout to all the amazing partners that ive had that have helped me get this far!! Ive gotten first in fossils at every in person tournament ive been to this year, hoping to keep that streak alive (lost is at states frickkk)

Competition Experiences
Sierra Vista Science Showdown
This was sv's first "competition" of the year, we were just introduced to this years events and were being given a mock competition at the end of the sv scioly summer camp. These were by far the easiest test of the year, Im still salty about loosing fossils because i lost by 0.25 points to THATDINOSAURKLD. Though these tests were really easy, I have to say they were pretty well written, the fossils test was probably better than half the invitationals this season, and though i wasn't in meteorology at this time, I saw the test and it was flat out demonic, to this day i don't understand it... This was my first time ever doing flight, and I broke my plane the day before the competition, I was able to fix it during a trim flight, where i got 30 seconds (which was good at the time), but on my official flight, i pushed too many winds and my weak fuselage couldn't handle it, snapping in half. Thus, leaving me with a two second flight... suprisingly i didn't place last though!! i rate this competition 8/10
Sierra Vista Scrimmage
Sierra Vista scrimmage was great, it was so nostalgic and i absolutely loved every second of it. It was my one year anniversary of doing scioly. I still remember being so bummed out from scrimmage last year, and vowed to never have that feeling again. Honestly, i really enjoyed the dynamic planet test from this scrimmage, it was so freaking well written and honestly really fun. It wasn't too easy or too hard. This was my first taste at being "good" at flight, I ended up getting a 1:37, placing be at third. 3 seconds away from second place. Fossils went horribly, i spelled almost everything wrong, and instead of getting second i go FIFTH, this competition taught me to extra careful with my fossil spelling. Unforutunately, this scrimmage kicked off my scrimmage bad luck in fossils... I rate this competition 8.75/10
JOKRS (OC Scrimmage)
JOKRS was held at ocsa, and they didn't freaking have flight, so I only walked away with one medal. This was the lowest point of my scioly career, I again messed up fossils, and barely got second in dynamic planet. the dynamic planet test was written by the jeffery trails coach, and was all multiple choice, which i didn't enjoy at all. The fossils test was pretty hard, and my binder was pretty much useless. The meteorology test was not my favorite, and i bombed it. Looking back, the meteo test wasn't too bad, I for sure could have done better. i rate this competition 3/10
Highlands Invitational
Sierra vista ran highlands as a scrimmage, so we were all solo while all the other schools were in pairs. I didn't do too bad, being 2nd in dynamic planet, 2nd in meteo, and 5th in fossils in sierra vista rankings. The dynamic planet test was barely any mcq's, and had too many short answer questions. The meteorology test was pretty good, and was my favorite Gordon test of the season. Fossils was really easy, but I messed up because I id'd one specimen wrong, messing up my whole ranking (frick u trilobites). Again, flight was not run. i rate this competition 5/10
Rickards Invitational
Rickards was the best online tournament of the year. this was the week before dodgen, so it was kinda like sierra vista's warmup for Dodgen. The dynamic planet test was incredibly hard, and had too much physics for me. The fossils test was well written, and was honestly really fun. The meteorology test was WAY to hard, and we barely understood half of the question, we somehow got 10th place. Flight was my favorite event in this tournament. We recorded flight in atlanta, the day before dodgen, and i had a 1:47, placing us at 4th. I rate this competition 8/10
Dodgen-Walton Invitational
Dodgen was the start of my villan arc, all the hours of studying was leading up to this. Our first in person competition of the season, the tests were AMAZING. I enjoyed every second I spent in atlanta. The days before dodgen were so fun, and were great bonding experiences for Sierra Vista. The dynamic planet test was the fourth best test of the season, and brought on a balance of mcq's and short answer. The fossils test was absolutely beautiful, it was my first time with live specimens, and we got first, kicking off the streak of me getting first in fossils at every in person competition. Flight was honestly so fun, the ceiling height was so high, and this was my first time breaking two minutes in real competition. The meteorology test was extremely easy, and all mcq, we lost to kennedy :(. I have to say, the best part of this competition, was meeting Josh Finn. I kid you not, hes a freaking magician. he brought my 1:40 ish plane all the way up to 2:30 in the matter of a couple of hours. I learned so much about flight from him, and he really taught us the importance of having the right rubber thickness, teaching me the most valuable thing i've learned in fligth all season. Josh Finn fixed my horrible covering job in a couple of minutes. At the time, dodgen was the peak of my scioly career, and it only went uphill from here. I rate this competition 10/10
Bay Academy Invitational
Not much to say about this tournament. I kinda took it without a binder because i was on vacation. suprisingly we still got first in fossils. DP test was pretty easy, but i sold it without my binder. Meteo wasn' bad, but I left 20 minutes early throwing the last calculation questions on my partner. Flight wasnt run :( 6/10, pretty forgettable.
Dick Smith Invitational
I feel like at this point of my scioly season, was slacking. I was focusing on certain things I shouldn't have been at the time, and my failure at this invitational was on me, not any of my partners. This competition brought me two new partners, two people who would become very close friends. My best event here was flight, where i got my standard fourth place finish. Overall, I feel like this was my worst invitational, I rate it 2/10.
Camas
I was supposed to go to camas, but my baby brother got sick so I had to stay back :(
Troy Invitational
Having missed Camas and Rustin due to personal reasons, I was at an all time low. Winter break rolled around, and I had nothing better to do rather than grind scioly. I still remember the day teams came out for this invitational, I was put on the second team, which really bummed me out. Unfortunately, this wasn't the only time I would have this feeling. However, I brushed it off and locked in for troy. The spark that lit within me during winter break was all leading up to this, and I performed. I had a new partner, THATDINOSAURKLD, and we had basically no practice together. Thankfully I was really good friends with him and we studied a lot in the couple of days before. When Troy rolled around, we didn't disappoint. The dynamic planet test was the second best of the season, and I was in the zone the whole time. We ended up getting second in dp (losing to kennedy, continuing a pattern of me losing to kennedy) We beat sierra vista's top team. We won fossils, and got fifth in flight, beating SV's top team in both. Troy was amazing, I still remember sitting at the very top of the bleachers and running down when we got our medals. I rate it 10/10.
BirdSO Invitational
I personally think this invitational is overrated, this was my first time being moved onto Sierra Vista's top team, and i did pretty bad. We sold Metorology, getting 10th and it was by far the worst test of the season. My flight went okay, but the other teams were just so good we ended up getting 6th, I soloed dp as my partner was a filler and didn't do anything and i got fifth. Fossils was also me basically soloing as my partner was just a binder flipper, but I somehow got first. Overall, I didn't perform that well at birdso but SV got first thankfully. I rate this competition a 4/10
Sierra Vista Invitational
Greatest invitational of all time. I performed the best at this invitational, having swept fossils and dynamic planet. Flight went okay, and i used a plane i had just trimmed minutes before (i was literally trimming seconds before we checked in). This invitational brought the best Dynamic Planet test of the season, and one of the best fossils tests of the year. Unfortunately, this brought my 21st in meteorology, which ended up being the reason I was not on the top team in the upcoming competitions. This 21st would cause a lof of backlash from coaches and I grinded the next week to get rid of the 21st, Regionals was my last chance to perform to get onto the top team. Overall i rate this competition 11/10.
Orange County Regionals
Orange County regionals was great. The week before this I spent all my time grinding the heck out of Meteorology, and it was worth it. The tests were pretty easy, and we won fossils. I got third in DP, loosing to both OCSA teams, but thankfully beating SV black. The gym was horrible, and my flight climbed all the way to the top DESPITE the AC but we still got stuck (tough luck..) I personally beleive I had the greatest comeback in Meteorology, going from 21st to 3rd in one week. Overall OC regionals was pretty good, but also kinda sad because I had to say goodbye to my favorite partner, THATDINOSAURKlD, as I would be moving onto the top team without him :((. Overall I rate Regionals 9/10.
OCSA Invitational
Honestly one of the best invitationals of the year, the tests were really good and the vibe was crazy. We precorded flight and used the ceiling height multiplier to get us 4th on our backup plane. The DP was pretty hard, and we lost to OCSA by one point :(. The fossils test was okay and the meteorology test was too hard, we lost to OCSA by 30 points in meteo. Overall I performed pretty well with my new partner and this invitational was super lit. Plus, I kept my fossils streak! I rate it 9.5/10
SoCal States
This was it. My whole scioly career was leading up to a moment like this, and this could have very well been the end for my middle school science olympiad career. This wasn't just the hard work I had put in a couple of weeks before April 6th, it was two years of sleepless nights and crying over lineups. It was all put to the test here, any little mistake would cost a chance of going to Nationals. OCSA was right on our tails the whole day, and I'll admit, I was freaking terrified. I'll go through my whole day. I woke up at 4:30 and trimmed my plane a little bit in the hotel lobby in my pajamas, and we set out to Caltech at around 6:45. I got there and realized I LEFT MY PLANES IN THE HOTEL ROOM AND THEY WERE ALLOWING PRACTICE IN THE MORNING BRUHHH. Mr. Evola and Coach Ronnie (my flight coach) were asking me where I was and I had to tell them I couldn't practice because I had left my plane in the hotel!!!!! But it was okay, I would probably be fine without practice, right? So at around 7:45 we tried finding our rooms, and got lost about 50 times. But we finally found all of them and walked into the DP building at 8:15. But guess what, we couldn't find the DP room... But its okay because we found the room in time (yay!) DP test was solid, it had us drawing graphs but I ain't complaining. We kinda cooked it and walked out of there feeling good. After DP we went straight to Fossils, and I was exhausted from the hours of studying the night before and the goofy DP questions. So I was only half awake during Fossils, and it was a really easy test. However we messed up the question numbers and lost a TON of points for the silliest schist. After Fossils, I got my first look at the gym, and watched some Flights in there and came up with a plan. Meteo rolled around and my partner was trying to give me directions on the phone but I got lost at Caltech so she had to come and escort me to the meteo room lol. At the time, I thought we didn't do too bad except when my partner was reviewing my work I messed up on stupid stuff, so like when it asked to select the wrong answer I selected the right one lmao - again I was bascially dead at the time due to all the studying and sleepless nights days before. Here it was, the last dance. Flight. I was terrified as Coach Ronnie told me he saw a 3:12 and 2:50, and on a low ahh ceiling I thought I was gonna pull out a 2:10 lol. So I tried to stall my flight till the very end of the last timeblock but OCSA ALSO HAD THAT IDEA AND THE PROCTORS TOLD US TO NEGOTIATE WHO WOULD GO LAST BUT WE COULDNT DECIDE LOLL (love the OCSA flight team btw) The proctors made us go together, pretty funny SV and OCSA going at the same time. I was shaking in my boots and thought I lost my lubricant but thankfully my partner found it (w her). It took me 5 minutes to wind up and test and break a couple of motors. After the first wind, I called my first official, the whole Sierra Vista team in the stands watching me, and I let my plane go AND PULLED A FREAKING 2:55 LETS GO MAN. With seconds left to wind up my 2nd official, I forgot to back up and WINGED my second flight (lol get it). The sad part is I bet I would have won flight if my plane didn't hit the ceiling so many times and redirected on the second official but its okay. And then it happened, states was over and we were ready for awards!! Caltech had a great awards place and we were so hype waiting in the long line and totally not cutting. Oh yeah I forgot to mention we watched Jordan awards while in line which was super fun. Awards brought me 4 medals, 1st in DP, 2nd in Flight, 4th in Fossils, and 5th in Meteo (idk how we got 5th but got 1st at lex but wtv). The scariest part of this whole thing were the final results. We were all counting points to see how much OCSA beat us by lol. Full disclaimer, and I gotat put it out there. For those of you in other states who think SoCal is an easy SV win you could not be more wrong. OCSA is a great team that pushed us so much this year and could have easily won state. BUT WE WON LETS GO DUDE WE ARE GOING TO NATIONALS. I'll expand more on this stuff after Nats but I really want to give a shoutout to all the amazing coaches who helped us get here, we couldn't have done it without you guys! Now let's test our luck at nationals, mark your calendars for May 25th boys. 10/10 competition and my first state competition.
Nationals
ok wow. I'm writing this months after nats happened but I've reflected a lot after nats. nats wasn't great. my reflection has lead me to a couple of conclusions, in this scenario there were some things I couldn't control. my partner was barely around, she prioritized her ego over actually studying, and while all the other pairs on our team put in over 50-60 hours of work together in the two months leading up to nats, I cant say my partner and I put in more than 10. she was just never there. but I cant sit here and say that placing badly in my study events was all my partners fault. no, I take accountability. i should have studying more efficiently, i should have prioritized my weaknesses, i cant do anything to fix my partner, all i could have done was fix myself. i know a lot of people were shocked to see sierra vista get 6th place, but deep down in the weeks leading up to nats, i knew something bad like that would happen. the fault cant be blamed on a single person, the failure was due to the whole team. that being said, it is what it is, it was a middle school competition and i learned a lot of life lessons from nationals, and science olympiad in general. so to anyone stressing over a scioly middle school competition, calm down, try your best, but if you don't do well. its not the end of the world. good luck to all of you. nats wasn't all bad. i ended up getting first in flight by literally a second, flying in that gym and having a cheering crowd for me when i won was a great feeling. but i could not have done it alone, again my partner did nothing (she was a filler so that's not really her fault) but my mentors helped me through flight so much. coach ronnie and josh finn are great mentors, and friends to this day, i could not have done anything without them. i had both a negative and positive run at nats, and i learned a lot from it.
Event Rankings
Dynamic Planet Hydrology
This is by far my least favorite scioly event, and I think its utterly pointless. I competed in this event from 2022-2023, and my highest finish was 2nd place. I barely got any medals in this event, and never really cared to study it. All the stuff about water just went over my head. I think the only thing I understood from the event was the freaking Water Cycle (lol). Overall, this event brought a lot of pain to 7th grade Zaid, and I wish I hadn't competed in it. I rate this event 0/10
Rocks and Minerals
At the start of my scioly career, this event is basically what I lived for. I actually got my first Science Olympiad medal in this very event! But towards the middle of the season, I hit a slump and couldn't medal in rocks anymore (probably because all the other schools were so damn good). I started to loose interest and stop studying the event. I'll rate the event a 3/10
Meteorology Severe Storms
This event is the bane of my existence. I was forced to pick it up in the early season and never studied it, kinda just relying on my partners. When Sierra Vita Invitational rolled around, I got 21st, and was told I needed to get good at Meteorology if I wanted a spot on Sierra Vista's Varsity squad. I grinded the event before OC Regionals (I had one week to do so) and ended up getting third! Greatest comeback of all time!! My BirdSO Satellite and OC Regionals medal in this event are some of my favorite scioly medals of all time. I proved not only the coaches, but to MYSELF that if you work hard and really focus on something, that hard work won't go to waste (ik its corny). Overall, I rate this event a 6.5/10
Solar System
I hated this event in the beginning of the season, but changed my mind after UTA. My Solar UTA medal was my first in person scioly medal that I may or may not have lost already... Overall, I didn't really understand the physics of the event but still really liked it! I rate this event 6.75/10.
Fossils
To me, Fossils is kind of a useless event, but its my best event so I had to rank it high. Making and navigating binders is really fun, and I love all the weird looks and gasps I get when I carry around my 4-inch binder at competitions. My fossils binder is my prized posession, and has won me countless tournaments. For some reason, I have a tendency to sell online tournaments but cook in person ones for Fossils. Overall this event is pretty bork but really easy, I rate it 8/10
Flight
Flight is tied for my favorite event. The satisfaction of putting up a 3:30 flight is better than getting first in every event. I personally love data collecting, and love the time I spend in the gym for Flight. My partner is a filler, so I'm the only real flier on the team. Flight is the best build event in scioly, but is really hard to master. Planes are really fragile, and one small rip in your covering and your screwed. I have made a lot of mistakes, and am still learning about aerodynamics. I just wanted to shout out all the flight coaches and alumni that have helped me reach the amazing times I'm putting up today, it wouldn't have been possible without you guys. Now, I just have to not absolutely sell states :) I rate this event 10/10.
Dynamic Planet Tectonics
I don't know why but I love this event. There isn't really much to say. It's the defining geology event, and is really fun to study. It makes you appreciate everything around you, and tests are pretty fun, especially long ones. 10/10
