First of all, sorry about the cringe username (i made it when i was a seventh grader). Also the Sciowiki thing didn't really work the first, like 5 times so I had to keep thinking of new usernames.
Introduction
I accidentally lost all of my seventh grade Sciowiki Page so until I find it let's just assume I never had one (It was cringe so no big loss).
Right so I'm currently in 8th Grade at Sierra Vista Middle School. If you don't know Sierra Vista, honestly I don't blame you because last year was pretty rough for us. For the sake of this introduction, I'll just assume you competed last year or browsed through old National archives. This year I'm competing in Fossils, Dynamic Planet (Glaciers), Helicopters, and Experimental Design. Besides Fossils (The best event), the lineup is pretty mid. Last year I competed in a sweaty amount of events so I'll just ignore the ones I didn't spend that much time on. My main events were Fossils (W), Dynamic Planet (Plate Tectonics), Flight (The better cousin for Helicopters), Meteorology (Severe Storms), and Mission Possible (yeah you're probably thinking "why did the geo main do buffed up roller coaster"? I'll get there). I competed in these events during the 2023-24 season (My seventh grade year). This year I'm competing in the 2024 - 2025 season (Idk why i needed to add that but whatever). Last year I competed on Sierra Vista's red team, or junior varsity (I like calling it that because it makes me sound like I'm a cool athlete rather than a nerd that doesn't touch grass). Oh yeah i forgot I went to nationals last year. Before you get all impressed, i went as an alternate. If you don't know what that means, remember how in the movie Gran Turismo this guy brought a bunch of untrained, inside dwelling, future prospects and brought them racing so they could build a strong team later on? Yeah its that. I have to admit it but I'm still a little salty that I didn't make nats, but its alright because trusting the coaches decisions is necessary. Questioning your coaches only makes you less focused and more likely to rebel against scioly and be annoying to the general public (trust me I learned the hard way). Anyways I don't think i missed anything so stay tuned for the net paragraph thing I'll write.
How I discovered SciOly
So basically one time I was walking around I saw someone with an anatomy textbook. It was for SciOly. One month later I was grinding the last weeks before tryouts because I suddenly decided to do it (idk why but i ain't complaining). Anyways since I didn't write a lot and don't want to make another heading I'll just group this with my tryout experience. So I decided to do strand 3 (because of fossils and flight). I was already a dinosaur nerd so i thought the event would be easy. When i learned what a binder meant, my lazy sixth grade self opted for using chatgpt. I was so lazy that even with chatgpt i did the first two fossils and just gave up because of formatting. Flight i was a little better. Not at being good of course, but at practicing it. Dynamic Planet was just me spending ten minutes looking for a free online binder. Yup, these below - humble beginnings were basically all i had.
Something must have clicked in my slow sixth grade brain as tryouts approached. I suddenly understood what commitment was and how cool science things are. This was my first time locking in, and with a week left for tryouts, i began to grind. Every day after school i would pound away at my events. I checked out every book i could from the library and practiced my flight wherever i could. My study events seemed pretty solid, although my flight could only be described as a twelve gram abomination that i couldn't even time because it landed before i pressed the button on my stopwatch. Unfortunately i decided the solution was to throw my flight when it was windy and pretend my 15 second time was a result of prodigious skill. Just to give a scale of how little i understood about flight, i used a DRILL with a bent nail to wind. Yup, that somehow worked. Anyways stay tuned for the next section which is tryouts.
Tryouts
The day of tryouts rolled in, and basically my only concern at that point was builds. It was also the last thing i had to do, which was annoying. due to my lack of knowing my competitors, i wasn't sure if i did good or not on fossils. i basically could only answer questions about dinosaurs. dp went a lot better i guess because i finished the test. i remember through my extensive reading, i saw a section on the wilson cycle. My seventh grade brain instantly went "Oh well! Such as obscure sounding topic will probably never be on the test!". Guess what? it was on the test. i was pretty annoyed. At the end of the day (not really the end, tryouts ended at like 2 or smth) i went up for flight. unfortuanetly, it went pretty bad and i got around 2 seconds. This really sucked because since it was the only event that i could measure how good i did, i thought that i completley bombed my tryouts. thats pretty much it. also my bad for the numerous spelling mistakes in this paragraph since im pretty tired rn while wrting.
