Solar Power(C) NYS Trial Event

Post by Glacierguy1 »

Has anyone been testing devices yet? Does anyone know what a good heat change would be?

What is this event? is it anything like keep the heat? (that's where you try to keep a beaker of hot water hot for 20-30 minutes using insulation techniques.

The rules are here, It is a New York State Trial Event.

The building portion of the event is to build a device to heat water in a 250 mL beaker using only the energy emitted from a 150 Watt lightbulb.

Oh. Ha, I guess I'm no help then, me event is simply keeping the water at a high temperature. no expectation for the temperature to increase. sorry.

How is everyone faring with this event? We're starting to build our design and its becoming more complicated than I originally expected. We don't have any changes in temperature yet and the 35cm limit sorta blows.

And specifically for the test/stations whichever they choose to do, what do you guys think is going to be on it/them?

Lots of thermodynamics, at least thats what I heard from my team at Ravenna invitationals.

When you test yours, do you have a metal cone or shield over your lightbulb?

Well the rules say that the light bulb will be hung from a lamp above and I'm assuming that the lamp will just be a bare lightbulb with nothing covering it to concentrate the light since they're trying to simulate the sun. Though, we have asked for a clarification on that, and we haven't gotten anything back yet.

I'm kind of hoping that a large part of the event will be on renewable energy because that's my forte, though I don't mind thermodynamics. We'll see . . .

I wouldn't hold your breath until you get a clarification from State on this event. Whether or not the lamp has a reflector will probably depend on your region anyway, so try contacting the regional coordinator.

I've heard that they are trying to coordinate it so that the regionals and states events have the same lightbulb status

Yeah well thats sorta messed up because its going to affect the total temperature. Also, whether the thermometer/probe will be in the the beaker the entire time while its heating or not will affect the temperature and thats going to throw your guess off if when you were doing it in school it was without the thermometer in there the entire time.
