Season 2014 - Site suggestions
The 2013 Season has passed, so it is time to start thinking of the coming year.
Is there something you would like to see done differently?
Maybe different organization?
Improvements to the Image Gallery or Wiki?
Or even new features?
Any other things?
Remember to read last years thread.

Re: Season 2014 - Site suggestions
We should add a way to report users.
I see millions (exaggerating) of spam bots with advertising websites that have NOTHING to do with Science Olympiad.
And the worst thing is that I can't report them until they make a post.
Sorry if this has been brought up in the past.
There is a spam bot called "hongdou". The account's signature has "Free Nike Shoes" links, but it didn't make a post yet.
Also, there is another spam bot named "Wallpapers". This account has links for free Windows 8 Wallpapers.
Another one called whitehate55. Dating Websites or something,
They all haven't made any posts yet.

I feel like it's not technically spamming by just creating an account and having that stuff in your signature... Although they might spam in the future you can't "ban" or remove them from the website until they actually commit the act of spamming. Unless you're Robot. Then you can do anything.

Then ignore them. They aren't hurting you or doing anything bad. Yet. Are they really breaking the rules? No.ScienceOlympian wrote:We should add a way to report users.

Re: Season 2014 - Site suggestions
So, here's the deal. When we ban users, it doesn't remove them from our database. So they still exist, along with their profile, they just can't access the site and make posts (not that many would return, anyway, they're usually one-hit wonders). We could, theoretically, delete all of those individual aspects of their profile, but there's one problem: Ain't nobody got time for that.ScienceOlympian wrote:We should add a way to report users.

If you're seeing new users who are bots that haven't posted yet, well, either they never will or they'll post very soon. Pretty much the best and only way to take care of those is by coming on chat and notifying one of the mods. But please don't make a habit of monitoring these bots intently. That's our job, not yours. Go learn science or something. It's much more important.
The bottom line is, if these bots haven't posted, the only reason you're going to see them is if you actively look for them. So the simplest solution is don't look for them.
You're not alone, I'm sure.mnstrviola wrote:I still would like a distinction between Norcal and Socal in the State category :P

Mwahahah!
But seriously, zyzzyva98 has it right, unless they are causing problems they will most likely be there until I get bored/motivated enough to look through a couple hundred/thousand profiles and delete the ones that are spam bots. If it really bothers you mention it on Chat or in a PM, otherwise it will eventually be dealt with.
I think there is a lot of past discussion over that. It has a chance of appearing, maybe if I get bored over thanksgiving (I.e. I don't eat homecooked food (lol)), or Santa could give you a Christmas present. Past that take a look at our older responses on that issue.mnstrviola wrote:I still would like a distinction between Norcal and Socal in the State category

Re: Season 2014 - Site suggestions
It would be nice if there was a "like" button on posts for posts you think have good information/ideas/links so other people will know if certain posts are worthy of reading. Also, maybe you could put a list of all of the posts you "liked" on your profile. And maybe there is a way to reply to just a person's post and then have an arrow symbol (Like this ^) that you can click on to view the whole conversation. Because sometimes people's conversations take up pages and if you are not interested in the topic, you have to filter through it. If you do not understand what I mean just ask. Thanks for taking the time to read this if you did!
(And I just thought of this and thought I'd put it down for fun. If anytime in the future you have extra time maybe you should make a Scioly Mobile App for Smartphones. I know this probably isn't possible but I just think it would be cool.)

Maybe like a karma system? It's been discussed before, actually, a long time ago, not quite sure what happened.
