Good question, since the final rules aren't published yet, although information about them is slowly filtering out. To help prevent the spread of misinformation, I'd like to clarify a bit: the rules this year do not require specific types of instruments. You can build whatever types you want, as long as 2 different types are used.

The short description already published on soinc states that all instrument types will be allowed:

Sounds of Music (C) - Prior to the competition, students will build two different instruments of any type based on a 12 tone tempered scale, prepare to describe the principles behind their operation and be able to perform a major scale, a required melody and a chosen melody with each.

sorry about the confusion
1) my coach did not go to the clinic (not that dedicated lol)
2) the new "short event descriptions" or something like that on soinc.org said something about "instruments of any type"

Quick question. You said that there's no restrictions on instruments. does that include range, or just type?
