Who do you mean by "they"? Also there is a lot of good information posted here from other teams that should be helpful.

This is kind of the point - it's a build, you're supposed to be coming up with original ideas. That being said, you can get a pretty good start with a basic microcontroller like an Arduino, which I think can be reprogrammed during an event. You could also try a gyroscope for direction if that's more appealing. Just try to come up with a build with basic materials and you should be set for that aspect. It really is whatever you want!
