In terms of competition I am not sure. At JT invite for top teams we had Kennedy with two teams that consistently medalled, JT with two consistent teams, and Kraemer with one consistent team. For BEARSO we have Kennedy with probably two teams that will consistently medal, Jeffrey Trail again with two strong teams, Churchill who will have at least one strong team, Sierra Vista probably with at least one fairly strong team, Piedmont IB, and perhaps Dodgen, Preston, Oak Valley, Eagle View, and Harlan Rowe for teams I would expect to earn some medals. We also have to consider the fact that JT invite was the last invitational of the season for SoCal whereas this is the first invitational in the country.

This invitational is literally going to be so crazy!

I don't think anyone from my slightly above-average school would get a medal. There has to be like at least 80 teams in division B.

Maybe you guys are great at an event everyone else does relatively worse in some hope can't hurt, right?

Yeah, like we're not the best in all of our events but we definitely do have a few events where we could probably place.

See, that's the definition of "extra studying".

SciOly isn't about studying "enough." To do well competitively, it's about studying as much as your priorities and your own schedule allow you to. When you don't medal, other than external circumstances, it's typically because other teams studied more than you. Saying extra studying is studying when you don't need to is a bit odd, as you don't need to prepare for SciOly at all, so any studying could be considered extra.


As gz and others have mentioned, saying you won't do well and studying "enough" is enough can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Yeah I mean you could be studying a lot more than other people, but you might be studying the wrong things or not studying as efficiently as some others do.

I don't think you should refer to it as "extra studying" since it truly isn't extra.

I think I know what middle school you are currently attending, and I attended the same one. Knowing what middle school you are presumably from, I can tell you that there is so much more to study. The state champion middle schools like Jeffrey Trail and Kraemer study their butts off in order to get those high rankings. It may seem really easy from an outsider perspective, but I assure you it is not. It is super hard to medal at an invitational where multiple powerhouses will be presents, let alone 80 team.

The thing about using the term "extra studying" is that it implies that you are basically done with studying, but you have to remember you are not. In Science Olympiad, there is so much to study and so much to learn, and that learning shouldn't be capped just because you think you are ready. You can be confident, but you shouldn't be stopping your studying the week before a competition just because you feel ready. As an alumni, I want you guys to do your best and reach higher, but limiting the number of hours you study will not help you guys reach a higher place.

You may have been able to place in the competitions you've attended, and that's awesome, but I suggest that you change your mindset on having to do"extra studying." You should really be studying as much as possible, to the best of your abilities, as there is nothing extra about learning new things.
