Re: Worst books
Seriously? Gulliver's Travels has been one of my favourite books ever since 6th grade. I hope you realise it's not just a hodgepodge of randomness but rather a satire and commentary on both humanity and government systems. I mean I admit that the writing style is a bit boring (all books about travelling were at the time; it's meant as a parody), and I never much liked the 3rd part, but if you haven't finished it yet, the 4th part is excellent.
Anyway, just read between the lines, think about the allegories, and realise it's a book about human nature, and you'll start to appreciate Swift a bit more. There's a reason this 300 year old book is such a classic. Just my 2 pence.

Re: Worst books
Of course I realize that. I do realize that it's a satire, and that aspect of it is very good. But it's just so dense, and near the end, it's just like "please stop". The third part was definitely the worst, and right now I'm in the land of Houyhnhnms, wanting it all to end.Mathdino wrote:Seriously? I know all that. -.- It doesn't make the book any less dense. I'm trudging through it.

Re: Worst books
The Glitch In Sleep - A children's Sci-Fi book that is thankfully not very well-known.
-The protagonist is lighthearted and somewhat witty and totally lacks depth.
-Both the kids and adults in the story act in a way that feels very unnatural.
-The plot is ridiculously predictable; nothing comes as a surprise.
-The protagonist's name is "Becker Drane."
-If I remember correctly, there's a computer "glitch" that moves through the wires, wrecking havoc. It eventually turns out to be a PHYSICAL CREATURE that's a few inches tall. That's basically how realistic the whole "science fiction" aspect of the book is.
It felt like a book I could have written when I was 13.

Re: Worst books
YES! I had to read The Scarlet Letter for my Honors Language Arts class this year. (I'm in 8th grade). It was horrible...UGH.GuyFromNowhere wrote:Scarlet Letter. Easy
But it was easy to understand and analyze. (I had to write poetry about this book.)
Now I am reading Animal Farm, which is my favorite book of ALL time. I can see how the book relates to the Russian Revolution, now that it is my 5th time reading it. AMAZING!

Re: Worst books
Animal Farm is such a great book~
It has, like, one of the best endings of any books ever.

Re: Worst books
If that counts, then mine would have to be Campell and Reece's Biology. UGH BIO.

Re: Worst books
The worst book I've ever read would have to be one I was made to read in fifth grade called Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. It was pretty terrible. I also didn't care for Great Expectations, and have a general disdain for bildungsromans and any other coming-of-age stories.
