Yep, that's exactly it. Some tests might ask for the specific variety of tourmaline or the properties that make it that variety, but you can answer any general "Identify..." question with the group name. (Although I don't think I've ever seen an ID question with an answer of garnet; most of the time it'll just be almandine like they specify.)
