Dumb suggestion that's probably already been explored: Would it be feasible to hold it at another venue? We come into contact with more people on a typical school day than at a SciOly tournament.

Exactly, I don't see why it must be canceled. This means that other high schools have a chance of winning Nationals this year.

If there even is a nationals... again it wasn't necessarily SoCal's choice. Health comes first

As much as that seems like a feasible solution, the problem is tournaments have to find a venue that'll be willing to let them host the tournament. That doesn't come on 2 months' notice and you still have to book the rooms, which can be a hassle.

This day will be the day that Southern California met its demise.

True, but I'd prefer significant delay to no States at all. I understand the need to limit the spread of the outbreak, but would it possible to postpone until the outbreak ends? I'd be happy with a tournament early next season, even if it meant missing a chance at Nats...

It'd be hard to postpone it, especially since they've been planning for this for over a year. Plus, you don't know when the outbreak will end.

It certainly was a hard decision to make, so it is understandably a hard decision to accept. But to act against the conservative advice of competent authorities (Caltech and its advisers) would be unwise, especially amidst a health outbreak.

Very true. It'd not be good if the state directors attempted to find a working venue and date within this amount of time only to have to cancel the tournament again. That's just going to inconvenience a lot of people, and potentially waste some funds.
happy new season!

I think what I'm most frustrated about right now is inconsistency between authorities. Some parents are panicking hoping schools will be closed, but we are still required to go to school and be exposed to others(some people have not yet learned to cough into their elbows). On the other hand, activities are being canceled to limit exposure, and between the hysteria and outright denial, I feel that, collectively, we're not handling this outbreak as well as we could...
