Epidemiology Challenge C [Trial]

Post by Jim_R »

Discussion for the "Think Like an Epidemiologist Challenge" in New Jersey SO.

Link to rules: http://www.teachepidemiology.org/SO.html

(gh: not sure if this is an actual event, nor if so a study event)
-The path of the Administrator is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.

-Nothing\'s gonna get deleted. We\'re gonna be like three little Fonzies here. And what\'s Fonzie like? Come on, what\'s Fonzie like?
-Cool?
-Correctamundo. And that\'s what we\'re gonna be. We\'re gonna be cool. Now, I\'m gonna count to three, and when I count three, you let go of your mouse, and back away from the keyboard. But when you do it, you do it cool. Ready? One... two... three.

Yes, but if I am reading it correctly, then I think that means for New Jersey, it doesn't talk about nationals. What is the nationals trial even this year anyway?

What would be the difference between this event and disease detectives?

As far as I know/read from the website, Epi Challenge requires you to complete a study ahead of time, then discuss your results at the competition. Disease Detectives is just studying ahead of time and taking a test at the competition.

Correct. I've never competed in DD, but I did study it for a short time my first year in SO. DD basically gives you a scenario and you have to answer stuff about it and predict stuff or conduct an analysis or something right? And it's a test on site. Epi is basically coming up with your own study and walking it through the steps (from hypothesis to analysis). It's a little different from other events because you have to submit a proposal of your study electronically which gets scored at Regionals and then you conduct the study and make a poster about it, which you present/discuss at States.

I feel like this would be a great event to cycle with Disease Detectives or experimental design. But having this, disease, and exp design would be kind of pointless.... afterall this is basically a combination of DD and Exp D only with a little more prep work...
2009: Protein Modeling (4th) overall 7th
2010: Cell Bio (11), Write it Do it (10), overall 5th
2011: Disease (4), Microbe (10), Protein Modeling (5), Sounds of Music (2), overall 1st, nats 21
2012: Disease (4), Forestry (5), Microbe (-), Protein Modeling (6), Sounds of Music (7), TPS (7) overall 4th
