The event description on the rules: "Participants will respond to interpretative questions on one or more state highway maps, internet generated maps, or a road atlas and one or more USGS topographic maps." I have seen a test that uses printed internet maps (i.e. mapquest), but in most cases it's a highway, plus one or more topos.

Road Scholar is practically the same every year (nearly always the same questions about the same subjects). The only difference is that the maps are different.

on the wiki it says
Road Scholar is split up into three sections: Topographic maps, or quadrangles, state highway maps, and map drawing.
Is this always the case? Will it always be these three?
The Wiki is wrong there. If I have time tonight I'll work on the page.

How is the Wiki wrong? These are the basics at every competition I've been to...

Well, yes, but those are just the basics. There are other parts to it as well, and the three mentioned may not always be involved. It's not completely wrong, but it's not completely right.

yea, knowing about highway and topo maps and knowing how to draw a map won't make you win.

Of course not- no event is that simple. You need a thorough understanding of the materials, not just map reading skills.
