States with No Invites/Regionals

Pepperonipi, what do you think should be done for states that have no competitions other than their state tournaments, such as Delaware and Montana? Tailsfan101 (talk) 19:30, 4 February 2020 (UTC)

Hmm, in my opinion the first 3 columns of the progress table can be marked with a "-" (or something similar), but I think the state page could certainly be reviewed for proper information (like just making sure the state tourney info is updated). State Results Table

Hey guys. Thanks for the help on this project. Wanted your opinion on something.

I saw you guys are starting to make yearly state tournament results pages (such as 2019 Idaho State Tournament), which is great, but unfortunately there's no supported template for those types of pages yet, so I would like to build one. (Just for the normal reasons of templating: reducing table complexity, ability to mass change templates, etc.) It would produce the results tables for each division of the tournaments (similar to Template:Invitational results box or Template:Regional results box). It will look the exact same as what are on the pages now.

Do you guys have a preference between how the template is built?

Yes, I was thinking we need a template for that too. Of your two above examples, I'm leaning towards Code 1, for the purpose of not needing a "Srb row" template. It don't know how much easier it would be than the basic table that is already in use, though:

I see that for each row (not counting the variables, team name and points), Code 1 has 22 characters, Code 2 has 30, and the current table has 11. Of course, one main advantage to a template would be the beginning:

Here's another possible template that limits the characters to 13:

I know that this would not be as uniform with other templates, such as Template:State tournament results box, but it does simplify things a bit (if it is possible). As I see it, we have several options. Tailsfan101^talk 23:40, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

Making a template is the best course of action for the future of this project in my opinion, and I think the third option is the way to go. I don't really see the need for a separate row box for this purpose, and keeping the number of characters down makes it easier to edit. I don't really have much else to add, though. I'm happy with the decision no matter what's chosen. (Edit: I lied. Would it be possible to provide the option to add which region teams are from? The 2019 Missouri State Tournament page and several others incorporate this and I think it's interesting to see the breakdown. Ok. So on that note, what about this as the final template?

The reason I don't want to use simply "1" is because I feel to an unexperienced editor who's trying to create a template for the first time, "1st" is a lot clearer as to what the 1st parameters are referencing. The reason I don't want to use simply "1st" for the parameter referencing the name of the school is because of two reasons: 1. That parameter specifically mentions the name of the school, and nothing else, and thus nothing else should go there (adding the "_name" reinforces this), and 2. Most other results templates have parameters that specifically reference the place, followed by the parameter name for that place itself (aka, standardization reasons) (like Template:Irb row). That looks good to me. I don't have super strong feelings about the names of the parameters and your reasoning about the names makes a lot of sense. I do prefer it to the other option, and I agree with your reasoning. If you want to create the template, go ahead. I would add one note, though, and that is the "Regional champion". If you look at pages such as 2015 Virginia State Tournament, you'll notice the regional winners are highlighted in green, which I would like to keep. Perhaps you could just add a code such as

|regional_champ=yes

One last thought - will you be letting Pi-Bot replace the original hard-coded tables with this new template at some point? It would still be necessary to add regions and regional champions by hand, but it would make that process a lot easier. --Jaspattack (talk) 23:51, 27 March 2020 (UTC)

Yep! He's already done this for most state pages (for example, you can see here where Pi-Bot replaced the hard-coded state tournament results box for the template on the Florida page), and it's somewhere on my to-do list to start applying this to regionals, invites, and state tournament pages. Official page for this is User:Pi-Bot/Task 1. So please don't convert the hard-coded tables yourself - that's just wasting your time, and that's not fun. ~ Pepperonipi ^talk 00:15, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Including States

It looks like some of you guys are starting to include wiki pages for the state tournaments in the Navboxes, which is great. Should this be the typical behavior for Navboxes now? I would say if the results are out there, then it would be good to add, but I don't think it should be necessary (at least at first). Perhaps once all the navboxes have been made, we could go back and add states to ones that have results. Tailsfan101^talk 23:05, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Relevant vs. All Tournaments

School? I assume you mean tournament, since this WikiProject is for "Tournaments of States" lol. And, no, all tournaments should go on a Navbox, whether relevant or not, and whether they're on the wiki or not. ~ Pepperonipi ^talk 02:39, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

What should I do with Vermont?

I have updated the state's page and make wiki pages for the teams, however I don't know the 2019 results, so it's really hard to fill out the school wikipages. I have searched long and hard for the results, but I cannot seem to find them. Do we make wikipages for defunct tournaments?

Are we supposed to make wikipages for defunct regional and invitational tournaments or only the current ones? Because Minnesota has a TON of defunct regional tournaments. --BennyTheJett (talk) 21:11, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Yes, all tournaments in a state. The reason is is that although the tournament maybe "isn't relevant" today, it was at some time, to many teams, and is part of the history of the tournaments of that state, which this project is meant to improve representation of. I just copy/past in a previous table, and change the schools/scores/teams whatever your trying to do around. That works fine. Avoid amboxes or navboxes. Those are complicated.

MN Defunct Regionals

I have wikipages made for all the defunct Minnesota regionals I could find based of logs from the forums. However, I have no results at all from them (not even the way back machine gets me anything). Do I just move on?

If you can't find results for a tournament, don't worry about it. The information might just not be out there. If you've put all you can find on a page, feel free to work on something else. You can always return to it later if you find something --Jaspattack (talk) 04:49, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
