Washington State Science Olympiad has grown more competitive over the years, with a number of new schools and teams each season. It has grown from having only three regional tournaments to having five regional tournaments in 2019: the Northwest Region (Bothell High School for Division B, University of Washington for Division C), the Southwest Region (Clark College), the Eastern Region (Spokane Falls Community College), and the South Central Region (Yakima Valley Community College, Division B only). After Covid, it went back to three regionals: NW, SW, and merged Central/Eastern Regional.
Earlier, the state tournament has been held at either Clark College, Highline College, or Eastern Washington University (switching from Eastern Washington to Western Washington each year). The 2024 state tournament was held at Central Washington University at Ellensburg.

Format
Washington runs a semi-closed regional system, with geographical boundaries that affect some policies (e.g. state bid allotment) but otherwise allows teams to register cross-region. Washington has historically had a combination of combined and separate Division B and Division C regionals. Unlike most states with regional tournaments, Washington allows multiple teams (up to 2) from the same school to qualify for the state tournament. Washington runs a regional event winner bid system, "Gold Bids", which qualifies the regional event champions from schools which did not qualify for the state tournament to compete in that specific event at the state tournament, eligible for medals but not accounted for in determining team rankings.

Trial Events
Trial events in Washington are held at Regional Tournaments at the Tournament Director's discretion, and always held at the State Tournament. Trial events are selected by the WSO Board of Directors based on coach feedback/request and/or trial events scheduled as regular events for later years on the NSO lineup.
