New Jersey has been competing in Science Olympiad since 1993. Given the size of the state, New Jersey is a competitive state with over 100 teams and three regional tournaments. Historically, New Jersey teams have been very competitive at the National Tournament. In Division B, West Windsor-Plainsboro Community Middle School has claimed two national titles in 2005 and 2007.
History
Two school districts, Montgomery and West Windsor-Plainsboro, have dominated New Jersey Science Olympiad. Recently, West Windsor-Plainsboro Community Middle School has done well on the national level as well, winning national championships in 2005 and 2007. In the past, Montgomery Middle School and High School perennially made it to nationals from New Jersey. New Jersey Science Olympiad has been around since 1993.
Past State Champions
Format
New Jersey runs an open regional system, where teams may register for any regional tournament in the state. Unlike most states, New Jersey is historically capacity-limited, with more teams aiming to register than space available. Regional and state tournaments in New Jersey are typically held on weekdays, whereas in most of the nation they are typically held on Saturdays. Regional tournaments in New Jersey run a reduced slate of events typically around half of the full slate.

Awards
- Medals are given to the top 6 in each event.
- Trophies are given to the top 6 teams in each division.
- 2 trial events are held for both divisions in each of the recent years. Trial events count towards team score. Medals are awarded to the top 6 in each event, just like normal events.
- Between 2010 and 2013, a spirit award was given out, titled the Mary K. Masterson Memorial Spirit Award.
