History
Minnesota Science Olympiad was founded in 1985 and joined the Minnesota Academy of Science in 1995. Minnesota Science Olympiad has a strong history of its teams doing well at the national level. Mounds View High School had a long run of representing the state at Nationals, but that streak broke in 2020 when Wayzata High School beat them at the state competition. However, Wayzata did not get a chance to represent Minnesota at Nationals that year, as it was cancelled due to COVID. In 2021, Eden Prairie won for the first time, and Wayzata won again in 2022, but Mounds View retook the throne with their first win in four years in 2023.

Format
While Division C in Minnesota has regional tournaments, Division B teams participate directly in the state tournament - there are no regional tournaments for them. Unlike most states with regionals, regional tournaments in Minnesota run a partial slate of events (typically around half of the full slate). Minnesota has historically run separate Division B and Division C state tournaments.
