Wind Power B/C
Short Event Description: Teams will build a blade assembly that consists of any kind of propeller/pinwheel/rotor attached to a CD which will be used to capture wind power. Students will also be tested on their knowledge relating to alternative energy.
A power plant produces 500 MW of power. How much energy is produced in one second?
Includes test image to show attachments do work.

The plant produces 500000000 or 5 * 10^8 joules (J) of energy per second. This is seen through the definition of the watt (W), which states that the watt is defined as joules per second. If 500 MW is produced by the plant, this means that 500 MJ are produced per second. Converting 500 MJ to J, we obtain that 5 * 10^8 joules are produced per second.

The Betz Limit is the maximum amount of energy that a wind turbine can harness from wind. It is about 58%(?) of the wind's kinetic energy. This is so low because, instead of wind exiting the turbine straight and slowly, the wind is turbulent. Some of the energy is transferred from the wind turbine to the wind, resulting in the wind's motion.

It's the percent of kinetic energy from the wind that can be transferred to the wind, I think 59%. Why? No idea...

The Betz Limit is the maximum fraction of kinetic energy available in the wind that any device/turbine/generator can extract. It's 16/27 or about 59% and it is so low because air needs to move on the other side of the turbine to make room for more air, so a minimum of ~41% of the kinetic energy that comes into the turbine must exit to keep the air moving away from the back end so air can keep flowing through and the turbine can keep spinning.
