For an event that requires impound, you typically need to bring your build to a designated location prior to testing for the event. Oftentimes this is so the event supervisor can evaluate it before you test it or to prevent competitors from modifying their builds prior to competition.

Events that require impound are typically those where the Event Supervisor chooses a target time or distance for today's competition. Part of the competition is that each team then has a small number of minutes to adjust their device to reach that time/distance. If impound didn't exist, some teams would be able to discover the target time/distance, and then spend a couple of hours in the corridors fine-tuning their device for that particular target. That wouldn't be a fair contest.

So instead, each team has to place their device in impound first thing in the morning, before the secret target time/distance is revealed, and they only get to touch their device again when their time to run it comes.
