2. Universal Transverse Mercator (or something like that)
3. Does it have something to do with how latitude and longitude isn't a rectangular grid system like UTM? (like 1 degree of latitude by 1 degree of longitude will differ depending on where you are?)

Fair enough, for 3 I was expecting something like lat/long are only equal at the equator due to the spherical shape of the earth, but it's fine.
