To reiterate what Chalker said, yes, the test follows the rules. I would have thrown a fit if it didn't.

The test was great, I thought (Disclaimer: I got 6th last year.). It was mostly imagery, with one or two sections of basic MC questions, but it covered everything about RS, and I appreciate a test like that. What threw me were the questions on sensors that I really did not study, but thankfully had some information on my note sheet. You should see if your coach has a CD containing the Nats test from last year if you really want to examine it yourself. It's also available on the Soinc Store here.

I also did Remote Sensing at Nationals last year; the test is very well written, it entirely follows the rules. It was run simply as a sit down test, although it could be broken up into stations. It has some basics, but mostly application.

Yes; the imagery questions are pretty much identification as you so defined, although there are questions that get more complicated.

Just out of curiosity, what particular satellites and sensors have come up on the tests that you guys have taken so far?

For satellites and sensors, basically all I've seen are normal questions on LandSat and the A-Train. On my states test, there was a question about OCO that threw me for a loop (specifically the sensors on there) and didn't really know the answers to those. Besides that, a pretty regular season of RS tests.

Actually, on my States test (I'm partners with Haverstall), there was a question:
Which of the following processes is used to reduce noise in an image?
A. Eastman
B. Mie
C. Fourier
D. Hotelling
Of course, we had no idea what it was and guessed Fourier because the other ones sounded bogus. I doubt these types of questions will appear of the Nats test though...Our State test still had Forestry stuff on it.

So, if any of you enjoy reading news on Remote Sensing (I do for some reason), this article was on CNN. Interesting stuff. Although, I am surprised nothing is mentioned of EO-1 (Yes, it is old, but the ALI is better compared to the ETM+ on Landsat 7).

Oh the topics I could write about for a RS test in the future.

I think it's sad how the US is letting its space programs decline so much, especially with regard to satellites. It's going to be problematic soon, though I suppose it's a good thing our instruments are outlasting their projected lifetimes, as the article states. Remote sensing as a field will be getting more interesting in the coming years.

And hey, with the changes coming about, you've got lots of material to work with. The test you wrote for Kapaun's invitational was great - I think I promised you feedback on it a long time ago. Sorry I haven't gotten around to it yet. D:

Yeah. Actually, when Glory blew up last year, I was legitimately sad. Thankfully, OCO-2 is showing up in the next few years.

In other related news, anyone notice that Envisat was officially decommissioned by ESA about a week ago? I was hoping that would be on the Nats test. Alas, it wasn't.

I gotta say, Remote Sensing is a very inconsistent event, and to win it twice on the national level is a force to be reckoned with. Congratulations to Harriton, specifically L42!

Thank you Quiz! I thought it was a shorter/easier test this year (but still challenging!). It had the same kind of format as last year's. I wonder how the scores were.

The remote test wasn't particularly hard, especially after taking Astro the session before, but my partner and I didn't do any remote prior to one week ago, so...
The test was fun though. And the proctors replaced the conventional stopwatch with a bomb when I suggested it.

Is the test/answer key going to be up?
