I think I may have confused myself then; I think it was that if the density was the same then the smaller one would do better. So basically what I understand is the 1/8 with lower density will do better? But if they are the same density the 3/32 will do better?Littleboy wrote:But then it gets too much weight. And 1/8 can still hold the right amount of weight and have no excess weight.

Re: Build Techniques
yes. in general, less density but same weight will do better. It can be proved by euler's buckling theorem i think.

Re: Build Techniques
hey guys, i have a dumb question.
what do we need to bring to the competition??? only the tower, right? no testing equipment?
thankss

Re: Build Techniques
Just a question out of curiosity, but how long (on average) does it take for <whoever reads this> to build a tower?

I'm assuming around 4 hours (or less)TYG wrote:Just a question out of curiosity, but how long (on average) does it take for <whoever reads this> to build a tower?
But I don't sit there and build of course; that would drive me up the wall. I think around 4 hours, it pretty much takes an hour for the base frame and top frame alone and bracing the rest of the time.

Re: Build Techniques
Wow, I guess I'm really slow at building. I build for 10-12 hours almost consecutively, with breaks adding up to about 2 hours. On average, it takes me around 10 hours to complete one tower, and the result isn't that great either..

Re: Build Techniques
Hmm, that's interesting
My first tower took 12 hours which ended up failing so bad I'm known for it. Also, I think the reason I can build pretty fast is the jig and overlapping bracing instead of doing it inside. (If that makes any sense)

Re: Build Techniques
Yeah, I don't use end joints either (I think that's what you're saying). Perhaps the design of my tower is too complex, thus taking more time to build than necessary. Or I'm less experienced. Does you tower have a square base?

Re: Build Techniques
Yeah square base. And end joints, that was the word I was looking for! Also, I've only been building since...October I think? I've been building decent towers since...Jan
Probably you're more precise than me..I usually end up with super glue on my hands.
