I hate to double post, but my last post was one of those that doesn't really illicit a response, and this one... Is.

How does one tell apart dragonfly and damselfly families? I'm having trouble with this.

Typically damselflies have closed wings while landed and dragonflies usually have open legs while landed. in addition to this, dragonflies are generally larger. The families lestidae and Coenagironidae are the only damselfly families that we are required to know.

I'm talking about telling the difference between one dragonfly family and another, not dragonflies and damselflies.

Like for example; Gomphidae and Aeshnidae.

if you are unsure about distinguishing the families, you could always determine the species and then work backward from there. most of the species are fairly easy to identify.
