sewickley's not having a team?
how is that possible?
even if the current coach left couldnt they get a new one or something?
Though students said they won't be participating in next year's Science Olympiad because their
coach, Chris Erler, is resigning, Mandi Semple, director of community and media relations at the school, said it is undetermined at this point if there will be a team next year.
This is the rumor that I heard. And, I guess that they just thought that SO wouldn't be the same without their coach.

Last friday was when I received the following e-mail reply from
Mike Gallagher
Science Department Chair
Sewickley Academy
"As far as I know, Sewickley Academy is not continuing with Science Olympiad. Chris Erler did a great job while he was here, but you are correct - he is no longer here."
My opinion is that they didn't have anyone willing to head coach. Hopefully, someone will step up and they will change their mind.
It's always sad to learn of schools that give up Science Olympiad when no one wants to coach.

I agree. Especially when the school was good enough to dominate states every year...

You'd think the students would be really upset over this and would really try to get a new coach. Maybe that's what they're doing now and they'll be right back to dominating states on April 30. Too bad there's no Sewickley people on here, at least that I know of. We could ask them.

I guess then that the two national teams for B will be Shady Side and Bala Cynwyd or Strath Haven.
Good luck to everyone!
I wouldn't count Whitehall-Coplay out of that group. It is a slight longshot but they did really well at states last year, and with the highest ranked team out of it (Theoretically, again with nobody from Sewickley here, we can't confirm or deny it), I could definitely see them in the mix.
Actually, I wouldn't consider any school that finished in the Top 10 last year out of the running. It's just that the favorites to win are Shady Side, Bala Cynwyd, and Strath Haven. If those 3 schools all have a bay day at States, who knows?

Or if a team we've never heard of gets a couple really good people who bring up the rest of the team and makes them a serious contender. That's unlikely, but who knows?

I agree that anyone in the top 10 has a chance but certainly the favorites have to be those that placed in the top 4. Everyone else was over 100 points behind 4th place.
Yes, but if one of those schools has a strong team and some good luck on competition day, they could upset the top 4 schools and win by a couple (5 or 10) points. I mean, look at Whitehall-Coplay and Hershey last year- they were only separated by 3 points. (If only I hadn't used so much glue on that bridge...)
