Re: Politics
I enjoy this video, and would argue further that the Bush deficit was not a good thing, but minimal in comparison. Furthermore, the poor choices of democrats in congress (see: Barney Frank) and their illogical ideas about housing loans have not helped anyone.

Re: Politics
Two things I particularly hate about this health care bill: an individual mandate and this.
It is completely tyrannical to force people to buy insurance. When I'm 18 and going to college, I won't be covered by my parents' insurance anymore. I don't think I'll want to buy insurance. I'm healthy, and I'd rather spend my money on books. Insurance can wait a few years. And no where in the Constitution do I see, "Congress shall have the power to mandate the purchase of certain products or services and to punish those who do not purchase these products or services."
As for the other thing, you must imagine the tables turned. What if when Congress was scared out of their mind by 9/11, and in the dead of night behind behind closed doors a Republican made a bill even more invasive than the Patriot Act and made it out of order for future Congresses to change it? This is why Congress has rules. So a majority can not trample the rights of the others.

Re: Politics
I propose taking this a different way:
Intelligent Design- right or wrong?
Should it be allowed in schools?
(I say no, but the health care debate is obviously not going anywhere, so why not go in a new direction?)

Re: Politics
Personally, I don't agree with the idea of intelligent design, but I think it should be taught in schools along with evolution so that students know all sides of the evolution debate and can form their own opinion on what they want to believe instead of just learning about one side or the other.

Re: Politics
No, it shouldn't be taught in schools. There's absolutely no scientific backing to the idea at all, and to treat it as a plausible scientific theory is rubbish.
There should be no debate or politics to it.

Re: Politics
Public Schools? Absolutely not. Religious Schools? Well, yes. Students in public school should not have to hear about intelligent design. Basically, Alphatauri, I think it's good to hear both sides of a debate when there is something to be debating. If someone else believes intelligent design, great, but I don't want to learn about it.

Re: Politics
I didn't mean that intelligent design should be taught as a viable alternative to evolution, but that students should at least know what intelligent design is. Like, "intelligent design is the belief that all life on Earth was created by a higher power" but nothing further (or explain why it's scientifically invalid).

Re: Politics
Who invented the name "Intelligent Design" in the first place? All it is is creationism with a fancy name to make people less likely to pass it off as rubbish. No it shouldn't be taught in schools either....I would think most people would be able to know what it is without having to learn about it in school

Re: Politics
That's not what intelligent design is. Intelligent design is broader than just creationism. It's the entire idea that this universe as a whole is so complicated, that it must've been created by a larger power.
And Alphatauri, I know that you didn't say that it should be an alternative. Separation of church of and state. Creationism isn't taught in my school, yet, I still know about it. And, if they're going to give one alternative view, wouldn't it be fair to give all alternative views? Ever heard of this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster
