Re: Ohio 2018
We were stretched thin -- sent two teams (well, 1.5) to Northmont and one to Kenston. I am not a coach, but I think it was just to give as many kids competition experience as possible. My sixth grader got to do 3 events this weekend! I don't know why we were told they got 4th when they actually seem to have gotten 5th.

You were probably told the trophy ranking, which would have excluded Watts' second team that finished 3rd.Thchs wrote:We were stretched thin -- sent two teams (well, 1.5) to Northmont and one to Kenston. Re: Ohio 2018
Having had a chance to review the MIT results in greater detail, I think a few things have been made clear with respect to Ohio's top teams.
- Mason is much more competitive this year than in years past. Their strong, second-place finish at MIT demonstrates that their performances at Sylvania-Northview and Westlake were not flukes. It is pretty clear that not only is Mason a top contender for the Ohio State title this year - allowing them to qualify for the National Tournament for the first time - but they seem fully capable of taking the unusual step of being a "top 10" contender at National's their first time there. It is worth noting that their "B" team took 20th, so Mason clearly stacked heavily to achieve this result.
- Solon appears weaker overall - both at MIT and in Ohio tournaments - than they did last year. At MIT, this seems to be more an issue of under-performing across the board rather than "bombing" a few events. This stands in contrast to the results trend which has enabled Solon to perform well in the past: placing consistently in the top 10 even if not winning many golds. Notably, their only gold was in Rocks and Minerals, where their reigning national champion continued his streak. However, Solon does not appear to have heavily stacked their teams, as is reflected in the conglomerate "superscore" which ranks them third behind Troy and Mason. It'll be interesting to see if their performance improves in the later part of the Ohio season.
- Mentor is far behind both Mason and Solon. Placing 18th and 33rd is an incredibly weak showing for this school. However, Mentor does tend to do better at smaller tournaments where there are only a handful of competitive teams. Critically, the Ohio State Tournament - known for tight finishes and low team scores - is much closer to the environment Mentor thrives in, which is perhaps why they managed to win last year, but then fall far behind Solon at Nationals. I wouldn't count them out quite yet, but they definitely need to show rapid growth to be a contender.
- Centerville, not having attended MIT, is the real wildcard. They don't attend many invitationals, and in past years their invitational performances were poor predictors of their State finish. Ultimately, their strength seems likely to determine whether they or Solon will be joining Mason at the National Tournament this year representing Ohio.

Make a top 10 prediction for the Solon invitational? Or is there one I haven’t seen?
