It isn't that hard to win a medal...sciolykid101 wrote:Hard to win a medal in huh?scienceolympiadist wrote:Ohio hosts arguably the most competitive invitational tournaments in the country.

Re: Ohio 2010
Actually, I believe it is considerably hard to get a 1st Place medal against Solon, Mentor, and Centerville, assuming that you are not on those teams.
2010 Events: Anatomy, Astronomy, Cell Biology, Protein Modeling
Looking forward to the '11 SO season!

Re: Ohio 2010
At the regional with Mentor and Solon, the two previously mentioned teams took 44/69 top 3 medals including 11/23 first place medals in 2009, so I'm going to have to say that it's pretty hard to win a meaningful medal against these teams. Also note that at that regional competition neither team is fully stacked and Centerville is not competing, and another top finisher in State Tournament, Chardon, also competes at the same regional so they steal away some metals. If it is that hard to win a medal (only 25 top three medals to be split amongst i think around 16 teams) at that not-too-competative-regional, it is about 10 times harder to win it at a bigger Ohio tournament with more competative teams.ellnoel wrote:It isn't that hard to win a medal...sciolykid101 wrote:Hard to win a medal in huh?scienceolympiadist wrote:Ohio hosts arguably the most competitive invitational tournaments in the country.

Re: Ohio 2010
Winning a top 3 medal at the Ohio Invitationals is hard but not impossible.
The different teams tend to mix around their best people and the dominace of a single team doesn't always show. The medals do, however tend to show if you are competitive.
Regionals are hardest of you are in one of the tougher ones (Piqua, Case, Akron). The other ones tend to be a little more balanced.
States is where many actually have a chance. Roughly counting, more than 50% of the teams took home a 1st 2nd or 3rd place medal. Of the 69 total 1~3rd places (3x23) the teams of Centerville, Solon, and Mentor had the most with a combined 33. Many other teams were competitive in at least one event and several teams took home 2 or more.
I guess what I'm saying is, don't skip the OH invitationals because they are too hard. Because they are competitive is the best reason to go, the medals mean more.

Re: Ohio 2010
I think Shaker might actually stand a chance in Div B....maybe at getting in the top ten for States. I mean, 12th place isn't that far away from 10th!!! Then again, the newbie 7th graders might just ruin our chances.

Re: Ohio 2010
I didn't think Akron was hard at all. We went to their regionals. + we got 2nd place. so we didn't get any 1st place medals...Coppley took those...hmph ... But, I think if you try, regionals aren't bad . The only competition that I thought was extremely hard was the Solon invitational. Gak. I think we got one 5th place medal. Everything else went to Magsig, Chardon...and.....(drum rolls for National champs ) SOLON....wiseguy said: Regionals are hardest of you are in one of the tougher ones (Piqua, Case, Akron).
