not sure if this has been asked before. but what defines a extra parts from a separate vehicle, as if you change out every part of a vehicle, is it considered the same vehicle or a new vehicle?

Not sure if that is defined. That is, your extra parts could be a whole vehicle or even more than one additional vehicle. Which means you could run vehicle #1 and, depending upon its result, you could switch in vehicle #2 or #3, etc for the 2nd run. That may violate the spirit of the competition but not the formal rules.

I was lucky enough to see your run yesterday at the state competition and I just wanted to congratulate you on first place. The rack gear and moving dowel was a really good idea and you deserved that win.

How did you design the chasis?

I didn't do well at all at my state competition (22nd place) because of a steering malfunction caused by a piece of gym tape on the testing floor, but my mousetrap vehicle had been testing to a score of 25 consistently, even on the same floor the day before competition. Feel free to dm me if you want pics as the states competition was my last with this event. Good luck as well to anyone who still has competitions. Some notes:

- Make sure to use a targeting device that does not rely on a straight physical center line. Luckily enough I did not rely on this, but they purposely made the imaginary center line at a 15 degree angle from the floor lines at states to throw some people off
- This may have just been the supervisor, but I witnessed a team impound a second vehicle that they labeled as spare parts. It is always good to have an alternative vehicle in case they let you impound it as well
- Bring something to clean the floor and/or the wheels to stop skidding from dust ( I forgot to bring a swiffer so I purposely went after a top team that used one)

Sorry to hear that -- I know you put a lot of time and effort into your vehicle. Even with a very well designed and tested MTV, things can go wrong. Among these are loss of calibration due to travel -- usually caused by not packing your vehicle properly, floors that really aren't very smooth, floors that are dirty, supervisors who don't measure setup distances properly or use thick tape, poor impound conditions, etc.

It all depends upon the definition of what a spare part is or what spare parts are.

It was pretty much just bad luck that caused this to happen. I feel that the event supervisors did a good job and it was mainly my fault for not thoroughly analyzing what had gone wrong in the first run before setting up for the second.

It all depends upon the definition of what a spare part is or what spare parts are.

I'm still not sure I understand the purpose of impounding a 2nd vehicle as spare parts if all you need is the spare parts, then why would you bother assembling a 2nd vehicle? It would be more work to disassemble the 2nd vehicle to provide parts for the 1st vehicle then if the spare parts were all ready to be added.

If teams are impounding a 2nd vehicle under the guise of "spare parts" intending to run it in case the 1st vehicle has a disastrous run then that's against the rules. In some competitions, the Event Supervisors will do construction checks at impounds, so you could risk having a good run with construction violations if your 2nd vehicle isn't cleared at impound.
