There are a couple of us on here who were accepted; I also wouldn't just rule yourself out because a few people online got rejected. Obviously with MIT you can't feel like you're certain to get in (very few people do), but you should still give it your best shot.
At the same time, why would you wanna apply to MIT? I mean...who would actually wanna go there...when there's Caltech? :P

Yeah, you never know. The advice that I got from my sister (who is attending MIT in the upcoming year) is to try to show who you really are from a couple different angles, and hope for the best. Hey, it worked for her :)

That's basically all you can do. If they like who you come across as, then you're more likely to be in. If they don't, then you're probably not getting in. When it gets that competitive, that's all it comes down to, and that's why you should ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP PLAN.

I second encouraging having a good plan B and C and D and E and once you're there you might as well have a plan F. I didn't get into my top 3/4 choices and my 4th/5th choice gave me financial aid that was so bad I really couldn't go there. I really love Lehigh now that I've completed two semesters, but when I was applying to schools it was at the very most my 6th choice. I don't think I can over state the importance of finding match and safety schools that you really like and would be perfectly happy going there, not just schools that are so-so about.

You should work at the Colorado State. It's held at Mines. It could use some supervisors that have done SO before.
