However if the information found exceeds one page, you should definitely allow more than one page per fossil.

Yeah there are some fossils that have a lot more information associated with them

Yes, one page for each fossil is by no means a maximum, use ax much space as you need.

It looks like there’s a subtle difference in the shape around the umbo and hinge. Astarte has a sharper umbo and curves slightly while glycymeris has a rounder umbo and is more symmetrical around the umbo and hinge. Not sure how great this is for identifying, but that’s just what I’ve noticed.

Here is a very condensed version of what I use. You don't have to use this exact template though. Whatever works best for you! The main thing to remember is to just make it simple and easy for you to find information quickly.

Common Name - Scientific Name
-pictures-
Taxonomy: I put the whole thing from Kingdom to Genus here. I'd bold the genus and if it seems necessary, the order.
Time Period: Its time period along with a specific number. E.g "Early Cretaceous, 99-86 MYA" (This isn't a specific species, just a random example.)
Description: A description of the fossil, with things such as what rock in occurs in, what parts are usually fossilized, etc. I also include what the species would have looked like when living. This is usually a lot easier for the animals.
Scientific History: How was the genus discovered? When? By who? Where? Are there any interesting pieces of history? Think of stuff like the controversies with Spinosaurus' stance, how our understanding of neanderthals have changed, etc. Trivia like that isn't uncommon in tests.
Life History: More information on how the living creature lived. What did it eat, how did it move, what was its habitat, what do we know about its behavior and reproduction, etc.
State Fossil of: Self explanatory. Delete this if the fossil isn't a state fossil.
Other: Any other information you may want to add that doesn't go in any of the other sections of the template. It's usually useful for more obscure 'fun facts' trivia.

Fossils Average Score

Post by InsertNameHere123 »

Hey, so I'm in Division B and new to fossils. I was wondering about how much people score on average... we usually get over more than 50% and we recently got about 60% on a Division C test... do you guys think that would be enough to get us through an invitational in December? Thanks in advance!
