Depends on the school - most are just housing deposits, although some schools may have a tuition deposit. Still, if you end up losing $500 in deposits to end up with a full ride, that's not a huge loss.

so, graduates...any tips for seniors or even younger, about the college admission process?

Do well on the SAT or ACT.

Submit your applications early.

Apply for scholarships.

that sounds simple enough, lol. well, with hopes of Illinois, there even won't be needs of scholarship...
