1: Troy (Pretty clear why)
2: Mason (great team just a few events to work on but overall pretty solid)
3. New Trier (saw results from Solon and was really impressed aside from a few bombs that happened unexpectedly)
4. LASA (solid)
5. Harriton (I think they are improving)
6. Boca (solid team)

It's worth noting that everyone is working under the assumption that Harriton will do poorly, when that is not necessarily the case at all.

Which teams got better? Who is a legitimate contender to beat Troy?demir wrote:As far as Troy is concerned, that is my point. They seem to do the same old. I expect them to be about equally powerful, similarly hungry and equally well-prepared. I don't think they will regress. But they should not be improved much either, while many other teams seemingly did. "Several teams are much improved. Teams at the top are closer, so the placements are likely to be shaped by bombed events" was my point. A second point was a household name like Troy will be seen favorite based on their past history, while teams like Mason (of last year) or Boca (of this) will receive some suspicion despite their success.
In near past, Troy's rare mistakes may have not cost them much, but this year it probably will (if they make any mistake) Are they favorites? Yes. Would I be shocked if they don't place in top 3? No.
Not Mason. Troy beat them by a significant margin at nats and MIT last year, and Mason has clearly regressed since then. 3rd at Northmont. Not exactly terrible, but definitely worse than last year.
Not Boca. They look better than in past years, but they still got pounded by Mountain View at Golden Gate, and Mountain View didn't even make nats last year (granted, they're in NorCal, but still; if you can't beat Mountain View you can't beat Troy). They didn't even beat Troy Michigan at Northview.
LASA? Nope. 4th and 7th at Seven Lakes Invitational.
Nobody has gotten significantly better. If anything, I see an overall regression so far. There's no standout competitor to Troy thus far.
I'm not saying Troy is guaranteed to win. But it's very, very unlikely they'll lose, and there's absolutely zero indication that they're any more likely to do so this year than in years past.

Just going to point out that LASA sends majority freshman/new members to Texas Invitationals so you can’t really use that as any reference.Alex-RCHS wrote: Which teams got better? Who is a legitimate contender to beat Troy?

Fair enough, but still I see no reason they'd look *better* either.Riptide wrote:Just going to point out that LASA sends majority freshman/new members to Texas Invitationals so you can’t really use that as any reference.Alex-RCHS wrote: Which teams got better? Re: Science Olympiad at Penn Invitational 2019
I am not sure that Northmont is a fair assessment of Mason. My understanding is that their teams were predominantly underclassman at this tournament. This makes sense given that it is a small, early invitational in a long Ohio season.Alex-RCHS wrote: Not Mason. Re: Science Olympiad at Penn Invitational 2019
One stands above the rest; our Mason 2.0 for 2019 rightfully goes to ABRHS!
A pity that they will not face Troy at all before nationals.

Wouldn't quite say Mason 2.0, ABRHS was top 10 nats last year when mason never even qualified for nats before last year.Raleway wrote:One stands above the rest; our Mason 2.0 for 2019 rightfully goes to ABRHS!
