Re: Your Daily Random Comment
The idea of sleep getting delayed an hour is actually pretty common. Myer's Psychology says that "many of today's young adults adopt something closer to a 25-hour day, by staying up too late to get 8 hours of sleep. For this, we can thank (or blame) Thomas Edison, inventor of the lightbulb. Being bathed in light disrupts our 24-hour biological clock (Czeisler et al., 1999; Dement, 1999)." So while it may not be healthy, your sleep schedule does seem to be pretty normal (although the first citation, Czeisler et al., actually says that on average, circadian rhythms cycle every 24 hours 11 minutes so idk I guess maybe it's more like an hour offset every week instead of every day).SilverBreeze wrote: ↑June 23rd, 2020, 6:02 am Huh my sleep schedule has gotten weird enough that I just went from sunset to sunrise without pulling a normal all-nighter. Huh. So does that mean a healthy sleep schedule has no relation to day/night, but only the amount of time you sleep?gz839918 wrote: ↑June 25th, 2020, 8:01 amThe idea of sleep getting delayed an hour is actually pretty common. I don't really think it matters what time you wake up and go to sleep, because we live indoors, and there's always the curtains closed during the day and the lights on during the night- artificial light does alter our sleep cycles in a very big way. I think it's good to just get the 8 hrs of sleep... which I don't :DBooknerd wrote: ↑June 25th, 2020, 8:15 amHuh. Re: Your Daily Random Comment
I guess the answer is sort of. Because of the tilt of Earth's axis, there are cities in the Arctic that get almost 24 hours of light daily during summer, or almost 24 hours of dark daily during winter. Astronauts also go on month-long missions on space stations which lack a normal day-night cycle. That means it's clearly possible to live reasonably without typical daylight hours, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it. First, daylight regulates when our brain stops releasing melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep. Consequently, it'd be challenging to even try to get eight hours of zzz's while ignoring day and night. It's like jet lag: you know you should sleep, but you can't sleep anyways, because of time zones. In theory, a continuous eight hours is healthy regardless of where the sun is, but in practice, it's a big struggle to fall asleep. Second, even if somebody does have enough sleep, living without sunlight (or nocturnally) can impair mental health, probably because humans evolved to love sunlight.Booknerd wrote: ↑June 25th, 2020, 8:15 amHuh.
