Yeah, we've only practiced a few times because my partner prefers to focus on our other event...hopefully we will improve with practice.

My partner and I have this same problem. In one of our practice sessions we had different ideas of what a certain word was referring to in the instructions and that completely messed up the structure. I think we just need more time working together, but agreeing on what certain terms mean beforehand will help as well (I hope  ). The rules concerning abbreviation freak me out and cause me to waste space during a write, but I think it'll get better with practice.

Yeah, we are still having some problems with terminology, things that I thought we went over but my partner didn't remember, but we are improving. Our main problem is time. My partner takes about twice the time given to build. Hopefully that will improve at competition where there will be fewer distractions, since a fair amount of that time is spent staring into space or looking at what other people are doing.

Thanks you guys. ^^

Does orientation matter in WIDI? The ones I was up against really didn't leave choice, so...

You mean which way it is facing? No, only the relationship between the pieces matters. The structure is going to be moved anyway.

WIDIs are graded by number of connections correct. I guess the only way for orientation to matter is if a couple pieces were attached to the work surface.

For the NC state WIDI, there is a rubric for grading it. Last year it was a list of 66 things that the grader would see if you had done in your build. For example, it might say something like, "the paperclip is sticking out of the cup 3 inches", and then another thing might be, "the wheel is right side up," or "the straw is pointing straight up." I don't know if this is how it's done in other states or at nationals though.

The orientation of each piece in the structure matters, however, the orientation of the entire structure as one object does not.

I mean like, if the piece is supposed to be attached by the top, the bottom. side, corners, ect. Especially if the shape of the piece is irregular, too.
