... Wanna define "stuff" for me? B/c i would love to know what "stuff" retired1 is using that youre really having to call it that hahatwototwenty wrote:This is still the ELG discussion...the stuff we are talking about are the materials we have bought to work on the event over the summer. Retired1 said that he heard of a potentential rule change from the trial event rules that would render all his "stuff" useless; that is what we are currently talking about.

I don't know, I had assumed it was innocent glider materials, but...
Seriously though, it is just the materials he had bought to build gliders over the summer.

Re: Future Aviation Events
OK, I bought 4 different kits that were state of the art for ideas and a bunch of specialized balsa for the final gliders.
It is going to be interesting to see what the final rules are.

Yeah, it seems to be down...hopefully it'll come back!
has anyone made gliders with carbon fiber?
I don't really get where to put them and general size of carbon fiber I should buy

Re: Future Aviation Events
Where to put the carbon fiber? I have always though it would be the fuselage.

Re: Future Aviation Events
from the ama site, the Slow-Cat says to embed a .003 carbon fiber on top and bottom of wing.

Re: Future Aviation Events
I personally am waiting to get anything more expensive than balsa before I get the official rules, but I believe that the carbon fiber is (obviously) to add strength to any part of the glider, and the reason the wings need this is because they need to be strong enough to withstand the force of the launch.
As far as the ama site being down... uh oh. If it stays down, that will not be good. Thankfully I printed out most of the plans from it already, and have read all of its articles, but still.

Re: Future Aviation Events
Has anyone else tried to find "carbon fiber"? I bought a 1/8" wide 3K tow. The fibers mike out to be 0.002". My thought is do I want to use the full width or split it or pull off individual strands. This was not expensive.
I bought a 0.003 linear mat from Stan B's site. It was expensive!!! but will do many models.
One site calls for matting all 4 sides of the fuselage, but is using medium 1/16 balsa.
Other sites call for 1 or more "pieces" on the wings.
There is going to be a lot of trial and error.
Notice the 12" gliders that weigh 1.9 grams? Wow!

Re: Future Aviation Events
retired1, I've gotta ask, since you're not competing in SO anymore, why does it matter so much if you've "wasted" money on buying materials that might not be suitable for this year's rules?
