Ooh, another person doing Microbe. And thanks for the info... This is my first time doing Microbe, and it seems pretty hard... Just wondering the most important things I need to know. Diseases seem to be pretty big.

It can be hard, but the test can vary due to different test makers. I don't know exactly how states was last year, but I heard it had 1 or 2 fairly annoying parts (though that obviously varies from opinions). I know I am repeating myself, but the test will cover most topics, not just diseases. There is no main thing to study for except general concepts that can be applied. Also, what did you mean by another person doing microbe (we can pm, idk what is better)? Wow, I can't believe there is only a few days left.

for us, we actually had a lot of disease stuff (ex. match this picture with pathogen, name the disease) or guy walks into hospital, has ____(symptoms) and identify disease. Suppose it varies from state to state.

The state test wasn't bad, from what I know...there was one question that said a bacterium was 46 microns long...fail.
There were diseases, but not that much, as far as I can tell. There was stuff like what MRSA stands for, the causative agent of malaria, I think it was, and prevention for tetanus, oh, and a delicious chart detailing about 5 different diseases (by detailing, I mean like virus/bact/fungus/etc, whether it had a vaccine or not, and prevention and stuff.). I believe there was also microscopy and determining FOV, and also something about lichens?

I'm not in Microbe, so I don't know. What you see above is the extent of my knowledge on what was on that State Microbe test.

Does anyone know the formula for calculating field of view? My partner and I completely made up answers to that part of the test (And we still got first at regionals... )

For people who completed MM @ Nationals:
What kinds of / how much information have you put on your note sheet?
My state note sheet was filled with essentially everything on the Training Handout, tidbits about the diseases, microscope stuff, and some other charts I made, but it was 7 font so I don't think that'll be helpful for nationals considering the potential time crunch. XD I'm planning to memorize more information for Nationals instead of relying on my notesheet but I'm worried I'll forget stuff at the actual competition. >__>

I'm not an expert on National-level competition (never been there), but I'd wager that you should graduate from Training Handout material ASAP. That's usually advice we give to people for Regionals let alone the higher levels of competition...

States was saturday and of course they asked what microbe caused potato blight ~.~. But it was fairly easy, kind of annoyed we forgot to balance out the equation for fermentation. But it is annoying how this event usually isn't that hard except for maybe one or two questions. Also, I think I have seen a theoretical lab station on yeast five times this year.

I have never competed at nats, but I would expect that you should be prepared as possible. My final note sheet had a box of info on each microbe, some stuff on food production, a box on bacterial growth/studying it, a box on diseases, a box on microscopes and stains, a box on cell parts/endosymbiosis, and any other cell/microbial/microscopes diagram or taxonomy info that I could fit in. You could also put in other info like cysts, spores, cycles, cell shapes, gut flora, etc. You should probably get your hands on a good bio book as mentioned, I found most of the answers I needed online, but when my partner gave me an ap bio textbook that helped me review quite a bit. Also, I use like font 4 or 5, no margins, whatever else I can do to put in info. In the end I also try not to use the sheet, though.
