Passive margins are not near a plate boundary while active ones are. Passive margins have very little geological activity while active ones have lots.

Graben - downdropped area bordered by two normal faults. Horst - the higher elevation region between two grabens. Half graben - basically a graben but only bordered on one side by a normal fault
