Re: Astronomy C
Did anyone else read about the hypergiant star that was just discovered in the LMC?

Re: Astronomy C
Yeah I saw that too actually, though the name is a little misleading. Some red giants are bigger than this one, although this discovered star is incredibly massive.AlphaTauri wrote:Did anyone else read about the hypergiant star that was just discovered in the LMC?

Re: Astronomy C
What does astronomy involve? Im considering doing it this year seeing as its probably on top of the list of study events that everyone else on my team hates and doesn't want to, and if they are forced to do it, will miserable fail.
2011 Season Events~
Fossils (Regionals ~1st) (State ~6th)
Towers (Regionals ~1st) (State ~3rd)
Helicopter (Regionals -3rd gahhh) (State ~5th)
Wind Power (Regionals ~1st) (State ~3rd TIERED!)
Hooray for getting everything i wanted?

Re: Astronomy C
Astronomy involves a couple components next year
- General astronomy knowledge- What's a supernova, black hole, the distance ladder, the H-R diagram
--astronomy knowlege relating to galaxies
- DSO- the give you specific objects that you need to know everything about
- math- you need to be able to do math relating to astronomy (i.e. dopplershift)

Re: Astronomy C
Yes the rules come out in september...To start studying for this event, would you suggest getting a basic textbook or just researching stuff online.
Also, what kinds of mathematical/astronomy concepts will we need to understand....like would we be asked to find distances between 2 points (such as stars) based on another point? Would geometry play an important role?

Re: Astronomy C
I would start out with a basic textbook on astronomy. In terms of mathematical concepts, they would test stuff like the distance between two starts in a binary start system or the parallax of a star and other such things so yes, geometry does play a certain role, but not wholly important.lllazar wrote:Yes the rules come out in september...To start studying for this event, would you suggest getting a basic textbook or just researching stuff online.
