Ninhydrin is specifically good for paper ... Cyanoacrylate is good for nonporous surfaces ... that's all I usually need to remember during competition. Everything else I usually answer with dusting because iodine fuming is not used very often nowadays.piimasta314 wrote:How do you know when to use a certain fingerprint test?
I know when not to use dusting, but for cyanoacrylate it can be used for lots of things...same with ninhydrin and iodine fuming. I looked up the special types of surfaces but those three can be used for nearly all surfaces.

It's basically just like identifying other types of hair ... but bat hair is obviously different from the other types of hair.computergeek3 wrote:Hey, I was looking over the rules and it said we are to know how to identify bat hair...can someone verify this for me? How would one go about obtaining bat hair? That's our biggest question as of right now.pikachu4919 wrote:It's basically just like identifying other types of hair ... but bat hair is obviously different from the other types of hair.computergeek3 wrote:Hey, I was looking over the rules and it said we are to know how to identify bat hair...can someone verify this for me? Oh. I really don't know that one. Depends on the situation, I guess. Maybe something related to a crime in a cave ... lol ...computergeek3 wrote:How would one go about obtaining bat hair? Re: Forensics C
There is a webiste linked to on soinc.org: http://sciencekit.com/science-olympiad- ... IG0054843/
It sells the chemical kits with all types of hair (including 1 bat hair), but it's rather pricy.

Re: Forensics C
Instead of going about getting expensive kits you could just search pictures on google. They're really hard to find, but all of the different hairs and fibers should have certain distinguishing characteristics that make them identifiable.computergeek3 wrote:How would one go about obtaining bat hair? Re: Forensics C
By the way, how much of the tests are usually theory? I tried a practice test and they asked all these vocabulary questions about different types of evidence and the investigation process...

Re: Forensics C
None of the high-level tests should be about theory at all, maybe a question or two (but still less than 5% of the total points.)
