Not true.... Lol check out this video of our violins the featured one is the B team and the one being tuned in the background is the A team. Having designed and built both bows it is indeed possible, but it is necessary to create a very good rosin substitute or else they dont work...

Anyone know where I can find the song? It says the main part has to play the exact notes written in the rule book so google-ing "Saint Anthoney's Chorale" may be risky because its probably not the exact same one... I would have had this down already but at our first invitational they told is it was Shenandoah(last year's song), and that threw us off a bit.
It's inconceivable to me that you 'can't get a rule book'. Your coach should definitely have one as a result of registering your team. Alternatively you can go to the official SO online store and buy one for $8 (http://store.soinc.org/c-14-new-materials-for-2012.aspx) There are other changes in the rules beside just the mandatory song, so you should really review a copy to ensure you can best compete in the event.

What covering did the b team use over their pvc percussion instrument? It seems they covered it with some film and hit it with smaller hard mallets

Those are glass bars... together with the resonating pipes it makes a glass marimba. The one the A team uses is significantly better as it can cover the full range.

How do the glass bars affect the sound? Do they help it resonate or just have better sound quality? Was it load enough without the glass bars?

Quoting wikipedia:
Part of the key to the marimba's rich sound is its resonators. These are metal tubes (usually aluminium) that hang below each bar. The length varies according to the frequency that the bar produces. Vibrations from the bars resonate as they pass through the tubes, which amplify the tone in a manner very similar to the way in which the body of a guitar or cello would.

In our case the tubes are pvc and the bars are glass... this gives the instrument a nice unique sound.

It might be worth either memorizing your music (still provide it to the judges of course) or bringing your own folding (el-cheapo) stands if you need it. You cannot assume that there will be stands in the room.

You can also ask the Regional and/or State supervisors if they know about stands. It sure would be nice to NOT have to worry about stands.

Since it's only two short pieces of music, you should be able to memorize your part.

Good luck!

Most competitions try to place Sounds in a music room, but if you cannot memorize your piece (or want to have it in front of you just in case) I would bring one along, or even just something you can attach to your instrument. We usually have one or two in our toolbox anyway.

Quick question--will there be chairs in the room? I have a cello that would be next to impossible to play standing up.

I would assume that there would be chairs in a high school/college classroom...although if you want to be certain, just bring a folding chair or something of the sort (or if you're feeling really adventurous, make your own chair).
