I could not have said it better myself. Multivariable, you're entitled to your own preferences, but it's hard for me to understand how someone in Science Olympiad (especially someone who has achieved a degree of success, as I see from your signature) could say such things.Kokonilly wrote:I love Science Olympiad. I agree with Luo and Koko. SO is amazing, period, and it pains me to hear that some people have bad experiences and negative attitudes towards the competition.luo wrote:I could not have said it better myself. I'm guessing that Multivariable had a bad state competition and is venting, feeling like his time was wasted because he/his team didn't medal. *shrug* I understand. SO is amazing but it's always frustrating to lose at ANYTHING.

That's what I thought, but if you look at his sig, he did quite well at regionals, getting three medals, so I have no idea why he'd be so bitter.

Hm. It seems s/he just added that. It wasn't there when I posted.gneissisnice wrote: That's what I thought, but if you look at his sig, he did quite well at regionals, getting three medals, so I have no idea why he'd be so bitter.
Why would someone be so upset over such a great finish? I mean, COME ON!

Re: Is Science Olympiad worth it?
Maybe my team could make it to Nationals but it seems like it's only the same two teams that make it to Nationals in NY state. Getting to States by getting first at Regionals was awesome but I don't think my school is dedicated to SO enough. Barely had anytime for meetings and everyone was working solo. It was a good experience going to State though. I think there might be more than just hard work, effort, and motivation that allows a team to score well and move on, and this is why I'll try and hope to do better next year but can't get some of that doubt out of my head that the same team/teams will move on from NY and that the team won't do well no matter how hard we try.
Goodbye Science Olympiad, until next year.

Re: Is Science Olympiad worth it?
I'm also in the New York Division B, and it's always the same two teams that make it to Nats (but they switch between 1st and 2nd at State sometimes). My team usually gets 10th-20th place at States, but we could do better if we actually had people study more and practice. We are a pretty good team, and almost everyone on it thinks that SciOly is worth it, but this is only relative to the other teams in our region.

What do you mean, "c and d apply to me"?quadratic wrote:c and d apply to me
Science Olympiad is NOT about cheat sheets. Seriously? No effort? Look, over here, we study REALLY hard, hoping we would win. We dedicate a large portion of our week to Science Olympiad, we see our family less than we see each other. And you say effort is not required? If this is all Science Olympiad means to you, cheat sheets and no effort, I'm sorry, but you're probably not going to be very successful. Please, go find a tennis court to play in.multivariable wrote:Science Olympiad is the worst competition/after school activity I have ever done. Honestly, it is a giant cheating competition. It's all about how much info you can on a certain amount of pages. It doesn't require effort, but takes up way too much precious time, time in which you can be preping for something that really does matter, like ACT/SAT, finals, etc. Because of Science Olympiad, I am not seeded high on my tennis team (due to the fact that I haven't been attending practice much) even though I am one of the top players. Basically, it is a complete waste of time and not worth it.
