The bolded parts of the rules include that the supervisor will provide writing implements (dunno why this one is necessary), and that words may be broken into parts unrelated to the term. Apparently examples of the latter are given on the website; last year, the national website's FAQ clarified that breaking words into unrelated parts was indeed allowed. Also bolded is that the words will be selected from the six content areas of Science Olympiad, whatever those are.
Alright thanks. Appreciate the clarification. I thought those were implied, but I guess it needs to be formally stated.
I was drawing a pair of jeans last year for the word genes anyways.

Aw, our regional supervisor didn't let us do that. But that now makes the event easier and doesn't let the supervisors interpret that particular rule. Dunno if you really should be able do it, but it's easier.

The 6 content areas are Life personal and social sciences, Earth and Space Sciences, Physical Science, Chemistry, Technology and Engineering, and Inquiry and nature of science.
When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen, and those who wonder what happened.

Does anyone know a good source just to find lists of the commonly used words, definitions, and possibly pictures?

In the Picture This Words Wiki, there are several lists of possibly used words. This:http://eezway.org/PicThisQuiz/index.php is also another good link for identifying pictures and getting ideas. (Link taken from the archived threads, they're really quite good for research. :) )

I absolutely love this event---it is so much fun! my advise to fellow competitors would be simply to practice tons of words with your teammates. you can find plenty of practice words in the glossaries of science textbooks and science dictionaries. and also, don't forget to simply have fun with the event!!

I remember making tons of flashcards and stealing tons of college science books just to read through the glossaries. If anyone just wants to practice some science vocabulary (or any kind really) and help the world while they're at it, http://www.freerice.com/subjects.php is a great site to check out. It's not specifically oriented for Science Olympiad, but it's fun and it's good practice.

On average, how many words on a test do you NOT KNOW at all?
